Description

In Gotcha two players travel through a maze. Player 1 is the Pursued, represented by a plus sign, and player 2 is the Pursuer, represented by a square. The Pursuer's goal is to catch the Pursued, while the Pursued's goal is to stay away until time runs out. The closer the Pursuer is to the Pursued, the faster the frequency of the electronic beeping in the background. The maze walls shift, potentially blocking paths and creating new ones.

Trivia

Controversy

Gotcha holds the title of the very first controversial video game. While later cabinets featured joystick controls, the first model was controlled by large pink rubber mounds. They were replaced by the joysticks because they reportedly looked like breasts. The game's flyer, which featured a photograph of a man grabbing a woman with visible cleavage around the waist, did not help matters. According to an Atari employee, the resemblance was intentional, saying that they were specifically designed to look like a female body part after someone joked that joysticks were phallic in appearance.
