Lemma

Description

Lemma is a first-person puzzle platform game. It is set in a surreal, physics-driven voxel world called Lemma. It is introduced as an experiment of a friend at Berkeley of Joan, the female protagonist. She was not meant to discover the world, but now she is there and she needs to find a way out. The game consists of different levels that are completed once a white door is found. The route to the door contains many types of platforms or puzzles. In most of them Joan needs to activate a number of tiles to open the door.

Solving the environment based puzzles is almost entirely done through parkour moves. Joan is able to sprint, jump, grab ledges, push off from walls, run up walls, perform jumps hopping between walls, wallrun, slide and smash through surfaces. Many parts of the environment float in the air and there is a focus on verticality with climbing and finding routes by combining many parkour moves in succession. Some levels also have enemies that chase Joan and attempt to detonate bombs, destroying parts of the voxel world. There is however no combat and enemies need to be avoided by running and tricking them. There is an unlimited amount of lives. Joan can experience a limited amount of falling damage. When falling down from a large height or after disappearing into the void, she respawns right away. By timing correctly a roll can be performed after jumping down to avoid the falling damage. She is also able to spawn structures. By wallrunning in the air after jumping or sliding, blue surfaces can be created that become permanent. This way, different types of routes can be constructed and there is not a single way to approach the levels. Some puzzles also involve these moves to fill holes. There is a button to slow down time, making it easier to combine different moves.

Each level also contains a number of optional notes and orbs that can be collected. Every now and then a signal tower is discovered where Joan can use her phone to communicate with her friend in the real world. They exchange information and the player can often choose between different types of questions or answers, changing the conversation. The story is non-linear and four different endings can be experienced. Next to the main game there is a time trial mode with challenges to complete levels with the fastest time. The game includes a level editor and through the Steam Workshop integration levels can be shared with other players.
