Rampage Puzzle Attack

Moby ID: 8424

Destruction and mayhem for the thinking monster.

Possibly the most mindless video-game franchise ever (and that, dear friends, is definitely saying something), the Rampage games involved bashing buildings, eating yummy power-ups and squishing hapless cop cars. Quite a surprize, then, when Rampage Puzzle Attack arrived at nintendo.com. Here was a deliberately paced, brain-bending puzzler, seemingly at total odds with the franchise's adrenaline-inducing mayhem. Would the unlikely matching work?

Yep. Rampage Puzzle Attack is a jovial riff on Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, in which you match and eliminate identically colored blocks. Rampage Puzzle Attack even borrows PPC's "chains" and "combos."

The main difference is that dropping a plain-old green block (for example) on another green block just yields a bigger pile. To eliminate all, you must drop a special shimmering green block. Also, Rampage Puzzle Attack emphasizes eliminating all blocks, rather than racing to beat a deadline.

As in previous Rampage games, rounds take place in various world cities. George, Lizzy and other familiar monsters hop up and down with gargantuan joy for your successes. They don't affect game play at all, but they lend good fun to a puzzler that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Rampage Puzzle Attack also supports two-player single-Pak play. You'll need two Game Boy Advances and a Game Boy Advance Game Link cable, but only one Game Pak. Our main gripe is that Rampage Puzzle Attack uses 10-character passwords, which makes keeping tabs on your progress much tougher than it should be.
