Nintendo GameCube offers twice the crash junctions of other versions for even more points of impact!

More cars, bigger crashes, and better graphics: What more could you ask for from this adrenaline-infused sequel to 2002's crash-'n'-burn epic?

Toast the Competition

The list of improvements includes 14 highly tuned vehicles and 30 new stages full of congested intersections and treacherous traffic. Driving locations include Miami, Los Angeles, the Rocky Mountains, New Mexico and a busy airport. The fictional vehicles range from puny compacts to massive muscle cars.

A mandatory tutorial, Offensive Driving 101, puts you behind the wheel of a somewhat humiliating compact car with the words "Student Driver" emblazoned on every side. Here you learn the intricacies of the Boost Meter.

To fill the Boost Meter, you must perform daring feats, including driving against the flow of traffic, swerving close to other cars, drifting through turns, and catching air off jumps. Once you have maxed out your Boost Meter, squeeze the R Button for an extra dose of speed.

Game Modes

The original Burnout was terrific, but new modes in the sequel shift the action into overdrive. Championship mode provides an extensive racing challenge for a single player. A good performance will unlock many of the game's bonuses.

Pursuit races give you a chance to play cops and robbers as you take the wheel of a police cruiser and try to chase down opponents. Try to force the lead-footing lawbreaker to ram oncoming traffic and skid out of control.

The thrilling Crash mode lets you become a car wreck artist, with the street as your canvas, Picasso. You are placed in the middle of a course with a full Boost Meter. The object is to plow your way through a congested area, usually an intersection or traffic jam, trying to cause as much damage as possible.

Plenty of unlockable extras await a persistent player. Playing through the various modes earns you secret cars such as retro hot-rods and stock cars. You can also earn decals and other enhancements for your vehicles.

Graphics and Sound

Even though its predecessor was no slouch, Burnout 2 raises the bar with a new level of graphical prowess. This time around, publisher Acclaim has crammed the garage with more, and more realistic, vehicles. The environments are packed with lifelike details, including road wear and street signs.

Crashes are improved thanks to an even deeper damage model. A disastrous wreck will strip your once pristine car down to its chassis and ignite the whole thing in a ball of flames. Lighting effects and real-time reflections make crunched fenders and shattered windows glitter like a Tiffany's storefront.

Burnout 2: Point of Impact overcomes the demolition-derby gimmick to become a top notch racing game. The extensive multiplayer support should make it a hit at parties, and many unlockables extend the replay value for a single player.

Returning to the streets in what promises to be the most adrenaline-filled arcade driving game of the year.

The sequel to Burnout, which was originally launched in November 2001 to universal acclaim from media and consumers alike, Burnout 2: Point of Impact delivers an incredibly fast and high-action driving experience, with vastly improved gameplay, new game options and bigger, better and more insane crash carnage. Burnout 2: Point of Impact boasts larger tracks, fully tuned-up custom motors and all-new thrilling crashes. Reckless driving is rewarded with an improved Burnout meter: take to the air, slide through corners or swerve to avoid a near head-on collision to fill the meter before unleashing an adrenalin fuelled speed boost. A new points system allows you to unlock challenges and modes throughout the game.

Developed by Criterion Games, Burnout 2: Point of Impact includes modes such as ‘Pursuit’, which allows drivers to race a police car in hot pursuit of opponents whilst attempting to ram them off the road. The brand new “Crash” mode allows drivers to perform the most insane crashes and incredible pile-ups ever seen in a video game.

Gamecube fans can leave their sanity at the starting grid and prepare for the white-knuckle ride of their life. The Gamecube version of Burnout 2: Point of Impact boasts major improvements and is all set to take pole position, taking the genre to a new level, with stunning graphics, white-knuckle foot-to-the-floor gameplay and improved crash-scene carnage.
