Creative developers continue to take advantage of the N64's processing power to make bold innovations in games from familiar genres. So it is with Deadly Arts, a smooth-looking tournament fighter from Konami.

Perhaps most intriguing of all is the create-a-fighter feature, in which you're able to select your battler's name, gender, height, weight, skin tone, hair style, hair color, clothing style and clothing color. However, you can't give your gladiator black-belt capabilities right off the bat. Instead, you have to take him or her into training mode where, after being soundly thrashed a few times, your fighter begins to learn the rudiments of martial arts. If you're a good enough mentor, your fighter will eventually become a champion.

For bouts that don't end with a clear victor, Deadly Arts features a points-based scoring system like that used in real-life boxing matches. An advanced algorithm analyzes the combatant's styles and techniques, then declares a winner. This subtle measure of performance enables you to closely track your progress and, as a result, increases the pak's long-term playability.

Deadly Arts is a straight-ahead martial-arts pak. No projectiles, big swords or other gimmicks for these warriors, thank you! The 10 fighters and two bosses battle in gritty 3D arenas, including a parking lot, a mine shaft and an elevator. The brawlers can break through walls, dent cars and otherwise wreak havoc with their environment.
