The Anger Mismanagement Tour.

Hot on the trails of this summer's The Hulk movie, Universal Interactive unleashes the green goliath on the Nintendo GameCube.

You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry

Like many superheroes of yesteryear, the Hulk developed his powers in a freak radiation accident. Usually he is mild-mannered scientist Bruce Banner. But when his adrenaline starts to rush (and it doesn't take much), Bruce pumps up into the ripped purple-pants-wearing muscle-mass known as the Incredible Hulk.

Believe it or not, being a raging, nigh-unstoppable monster tends to attract a lot of the wrong kind of attention. Aside from fending off military-types, the Hulk has to contend with a colorful assortment of wrongdoers intent on world domination.

A Green-Eyed Monster. But Hey, That's Good

When it comes right down to it, The Hulk is a no-nonsense beat-'em-up that puts you in direct control of the title character. The Hulk has over 40 moves and attacks at his disposal. For a big green behemoth, Hulk can string together some fairly impressive punch and kick combos.

Given the Hulk's incredible strength, you can pick up many objects and use them as weapons. For this bruiser, it's a cinch to pick up puny humans and throw them at enemies.

Just about anything you see can be destroyed in glorious fashion. Stone pillars crumble under the impact of a well-placed punch. Unattended vehicles crunch underfoot like peanuts in an elephant exhibit.

Rage Against the Green Machine

As in the popular comic book, the Hulk becomes more powerful as his rage increases. A handy rage meter keeps track of your pent-up frustration.

Once your anger peaks, Hulk starts to glow and enters "berserker" mode. Attack damage is amplified and the Hulk can also pull off devastating power moves like his signature thunderclap and ground smash.

Paging Dr. Banner

Certain situations call for a more subtle approach. Though it’s a blast to barrel through walls, screaming "Hulk will SMASH!," the Hulk isn't exactly known for his espionage skills.

This is where the diminutive Bruce Banner comes in handy. Instead of pummeling anything that moves, Bruce's relatively small stature allows him to sneak past guards and security cameras. Given the added intelligence afforded by his human form, Bruce can also solve intricate puzzles.

Marvel-ous Attention to Detail

Although the Hulk's roots lie in his long-running comic book from Marvel Comics, Universal Interactive's game is directly based off the Ang Lee-directed motion picture of the same name. The movie's Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) lends his voice to his digital counterpart.

While much of the story and environments are based on the upcoming Hulk movie, the developer has crafted a unique look for The Hulk game. A unique form of cel-shading combines realistic character models with high-contrast color and shading. The robust graphics engine supports a large number of characters on screen at once.

Hollywood Ending

Universal Interactive's version of The Hulk has done an excellent job of capturing the green goliath's unbridled rage and power. Nintendo GameCube players looking for a solid mix of action and espionage should check out The Hulk.

He's mean, green and very, very keen to smash his way through your PS2 and believe us, you wouldn't like him when he's angry

Spider-Man? Check. X-Men? Check. Daredevil? Check. Marvel's pantheon of comic characters is being rapidly exhausted by ravenous filmmakers, hungry to find that summer blockbuster. Next in line for the Hollywood treatment is the green goliath himself, The Hulk and true to form the game is just as big.

For those of you who have lived in a cave for the past thirty years, The (Incredible) Hulk is the story of Dr. Bruce Banner, a scientist irradiated by Gamma radiation in a freak accident. Whenever Banner gets angry, the Gamma radiation causes him to transform into a huge, green, muscle-bound monster capable of super-human feats of strength. Bruce fight is to rid himself of the creature within.

Like the Spider-Man game-of-the-film from Activision, the PS2 iteration of The Hulk takes the action of the movie and goes beyond, offering new opponents, challenges and locations not featured in the film. This third-person action adventure has a split personality of its own, featuring two differing styles of gameplay for both Dr Banner and his Hulk persona.

The Banner levels require stealth and guile as you use your grey matter to overcome the challenges between you and a cure. But get angry and the Hulk comes out to play. As you'd expect, these levels revolve more around you fists and ability to throw large objects at small people. The fully destructive and interactive environments can be damaged, bits can be ripped from the walls and used as weapons and anything lying around can be picked up and thrown at Hulk's enemies. In fact, the Hulk can crush puny bad-guys using over 45 devastating attacks throughout the game's 25 levels.

Visually, the game draws its inspiration from both the live action movie and the comics featuring a unique realistic cel-shading not seen before. With the pedigree of Ang Lee's film behind it and even more rippling Hulk action taken from the comic universe the Hulk is one HUGE game. The question is, can you handle the power?

  • Based on Ang Lee's hit movie blockbuster
  • Play as Dr Banner and the rampaging Hulk
  • Over 45 Hulk-busting attacks
  • Fully destructible environments - pick up and throw anything you find
  • Unique semi-cel shaded graphics

Acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee's film The Hulk (an adaptation of the classic Marvel Comics series from Universal Pictures) combines all the elements of a blockbuster, effects-intensive superhero movie with the brooding romance and tragedy of Universal's classic horror films. Picking up a year after the events of the film, the game follows the plight of troubled scientist Bruce Banner and his enraged alter ego, The Hulk, as they battle against the terrifying forces of The Leader, a villain intent on using the Hulk's gamma energy to unleash a relentless army of gamma creatures on the world. Betrayed by his long-time colleague and mentor, Professor Crawford, Bruce unwittingly releases the essence of The Hulk into an Orb, falling prey to The Leader's sinister plot. Now, Bruce must pursue his new foe through San Francisco, into Alcatraz, out of heavily guarded military installations, and finally to the terrifyingly surreal Freehold of The Leader himself. Only by facing his own shattered identity and gaining control of the beast within him will Bruce have the ability to overcome the insane intentions of The Leader.
