Avatar Ninja

Description

Avatar Ninja is a game that, as the title may suggest, tests the ninja skills of the player's Xbox Avatar. The player's avatar is constantly running down a river on the top of the water, and there are two bars to keep track of. The red bar is the rhythm bar, and the player must continually press the A button to keep it filled. The blue bar is the focus bar, which goes down when the player hits an obstacle, and will slowly refill over time. The lower the focus bar is, the faster the A button must be pressed to fill the rhythm bar, and if the rhythm bar empties, the game is over.

There are several types of obstacles along the way. Logs must be jumped over with X, bombs must be slid under with B, and targets must be shot down with a shuriken using Y. There are also many coins that that must be collected for points, as well as several ninja magic powers the can be collected to give an ability like a focus boost or shield. The level increases after set distances, increasing the speed and difficulty of the game until inevitable failure.

Simple, compulsive and utterly brilliant!

The Good
This game is really simple. Just using 4 buttons and no D-pad/sticks you can pick it up and play anytime. Trouble is that once you start you won't stop. When you do crash out of the game you ALWAYS know that you could have done better.

The level layouts change constantly so no cheap memorising of the course. It's a completely fair system and it keeps you on your toes constantly. This game is very unforgiving if you do slip up, but that's all part of the appeal!

The Bad
You can't play the game if you're not connected to Xbox Live and sometimes the game can suffer from (very) minor lagging. Wouldn't be an issue normally but then when you lose the multiplier you've been carefully building up for the last few minutes because of it then it does make you curse out loud.

The Bottom Line
A game that you buy for a quick bash over a weekend that you just keep coming back to. No matter how high you score, you will always think that you can beat it. A fantastically simple, well packaged game.
