The game first appeared in a May 2012 animated promotional video for the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic cartoon show; it depicted one of the show's protagonist playing an 8-bit platform game set in the show's universe.

In a press release from June 28, 2012, The Hub TV Network announced their participation in the 2012 Comic-Con International; among other things, the local restaurant The Broken Yolk was temporarily turned into "The Hub Headquarters", with all visitors receiving "a secret code to gain exclusive access on Hubworld.com to the eagerly anticipated "My Little Pony Friendship is Magic" themed, 8-bit "Adventure Pony" game already teased on the network." The code (HUBMLP8BIT), when entered on the game's page at the Hub's website, would unlock the game.

The game was later made public for all to play.
