While most rogue-lites are out there with the “git gud” style of gameplay, Devious Dungeon is playing the long game, rewarding those who persevere through the challenging worlds. It definitely isn’t going to be for everyone, but the throwback presentation meshes with the rogue-lite mechanics for something new, yet familiar.

Devious Dungeon is far from a bad game. Its feedback loop of exploration, levelling up and gear acquisition makes for a fun and rewarding experience for the first few hours, but its lack of tangible depth ultimately torpedoes the endless potential of its randomly built dungeons. Still, for less than £10, there are certainly worse dungeons to explore.

Devious Dungeon is far from being a well-polished game, but it was a lot more enjoyable than I could have ever predicted. A simple control scheme coupled with an interesting loot-based progression system made me play the game for a lot more than anticipated. It’s not exactly a bad choice given its small pricetag, but don’t expect too much from it and if possible, get it on a portable system.

Devious Dungeon is a competent game but it lacks any notable features that would make it stand out in a sea of similar currently available games. Different playable classes, varied level objectives, diverse weapons, and a plethora of other gameplay options could have helped alleviate some of the repetition but unfortunately, none of that kind of content is featured here.
