When the cursor turns into a blue walking animation, that means you can go to a new screen.

Right click and you get the inventory, the examine icon, and the menu icon.

Yup. You found Merlin. When the cursor turns red, that means you can interact.

When you choose to examine something from the inventory, you get a close up of it.
