Legacy is a first-person turn-based RPG. It was created with classics such as the Eye of the Beholder, the Might and Magic or Anvil of Dawn in mind, combining dungeon crawling with more or less an open world. The game combines discrete movement with 90 degree turns, dungeons with hidden doors and secret buttons as well as a party-based gameplay.

As nearly any RPG it starts with a character creation, though in Legacy it is done randomly and player has no say in that. There are seven classes to choose from that vary in their arcane and physical skills from cleric to swordmaster. Additional characters can be gathered at the inns, where they appear from time to time. New weapons, spells and equipment can be purchased in town shops that are represented by static screens.

The combat is turn-based, where only the front row characters can execute melee attack, and the back row can use magic or projectiles. Legacy supports additional downloadable expansions that can be accessed through the portals found in the game world.

Another feature is a built-in card game that can also be played inside the inns. It has a fantasy theme and is similar to Arcomage or Magic the Gathering, where players trade turns using attacking and defensive spell cards in order to reduce opponent HP counter to zero.
