Upon starting GNU Chess manually, you are immediately prompted for a move in algebraic notation. No chessboard is drawn yet.

GNU Chess also has a graphical terminal mode, which uses the unicode characters for the chess pieces. However, it can be difficult to see here in the default xterm font.

Switching xterm to the 'large' font improves things a bit, though other fonts/terminals are likely preferable

GNU Chess is more commonly used as a chess engine inside a graphical chessboard application. This is using xboard
