Racing games honestly aren't my passion. I didn't let this get in the way, however, while playing Test Drive Offroad. The simple fact is that it's not a very good addition to the racing genre. With inconstant controls and tracks which are hard to see or navigate, it doesn’t have the ingredients of a winner. Tag it with mostly sub-par graphics and it's just another game with very little that screams "play me." All in all it's a game better off left to only those who have no outlet for those mud slinging tendencies.
If you're hankering for an off-road title for your PlayStation this season, then this might just be your only choice. Otherwise, discerning racers should steer clear of this obstacle; better incarnations of this game will someday appear. This genre has yet to work out its kinks. Leave it be for now, and check back in a few.
PSX gamers have been waiting for quite a while for a good off road racing title to come out, and it appears that their wait is not yet over. Test Drive Off-Road 3 packs numerous features that would draw in gamers by the thousands, with more than 20 licensed real life off road vehicles and a soundtrack full of hot bands, but it fails to deliver the goods when it really counts. What sounds great at first is merely a thin farade covering weak gameplay, sub-par sounds and terrible graphics. I would say that I’d hoped these flaws would be corrected in the inevitable Test Drive Off Road 4, but after taking this newest iteration for a spin, I can’t help but wonder if the series would be better off being put to rest.
The locales are exotic, but gone are the wide open roads and and trails with multiple lines features in Offroad 2. The racing is faster than the last game, but the control can't keep up, so as a result you bounce off a lot of the walls. It's very tough to keep your vehicle going straight, since none of them feel like they have any weight at all. While tapping the gas button to get up hills might be authentic, it gets in the way of building any excitement in a race. We were expecting more from this game. The next time we get a craving for some Offroad action, we'll stick with Test Drive Offroad 2.
Partly due to the car physics, the controls are hyper-sensitive and tough to get the hang of. You need a very soft touch to maintain control of your vehicle since it's very easy to oversteer. The end result is that the Off Road series takes a few steps forward and a few steps back. The bright side is that I'm sure the next installment should be awesome.
And finally, not up for rigorous, intense racing events? Not to worry! Test Drive Off Road 3 is just the game for you. Merely aim the tires in the direction you want to go and there's almost no challenge at all. No special braking necessary (no braking at all really). Don't worry about traction, the tires have about as much grip as an arm-wrestling amputee. Just point and you're off. I won first place on several courses with several different vehicles, without laying a finger on that pesky brake button. Off-roading has never been this easy.
