SFS Walletsize: Spaceship Simulator
Description
SFS Walletsize: Spaceship Simulator is as the name implies a simulator that places the player in control of a spaceship. The device has three displays and six directional speakers. Two of the displays serve as windows immersing the player in the world. Most lights, screens and switches are made from surplus material, but don't have any actual function hooked up to them.
The game itself is written in 8080 BASIC on a Z-80 CPU with some elements in machine language to allow the simulation to be in real-time and three dimensions. The player can choose from a wide range of simulations including existing missions such as the Apollo program (earth orbit, skylab docking, Soyuz docking, re-entry), Saturn V Launch Vehicle (launch and insert into orbit), lunar orbit, Space Shuttle orbit and landing. Additionally there is a large number of fictional scenarios such as an asteroid pickup, Mars exploration (fictional at the time of release), Interplanetary spaceliner, hyperspace jumps, gas cloud sampling, etc. A simulation takes on average two minutes to play.
The ship is controlled by a joystick (moving forward/aft, port/starboard) and a slide potentiometer to regulate thrust. A button on the joystick gives retro-thrust.
Only one device was built, but it was quickly dis- and assembled for display on various trade fairs.
