Wanton Destruction is fun to play overall but is of mostly poor quality

The Good
The gameplay is good, and a few of the levels look fantastic, despite being made mostly by amateurs outside of Sunstorm. The airliner and the skyline maps, which were the creation of former 3D Realms employee Charlie Wiederhold, can only be described as stunning, and really make downloading this add-on worthwhile.

The Bad
The quality control. Some of the levels are awful for what would've been a commercial product, notably maps 3 and 12 and to a lesser extent, maps 7, 8 and 9. There are also numerous bugs, which could've easily be ironed out. The fact that Sunstorm decided to leave much of the level design to outsiders brings into question the company's dedication to product quality, and given some of the screenshots I've seen from some of their other Build engine offerings, one can't help but think, 'is this really worth forking out money for?'

The Bottom Line
In a nutshell, download and play it. It's worth it, but in some ways only just.

Trivia

Release history

The Wanton Destruction add-on for Shadow Warrior was already finished in 1998, but due to the bad sales of Shadow Warrior, WizardWorks, the publisher of this add-on, decided to cancel the title. Soon Sunstorm went out of business which lead many to believe the add-on was lost.

Later (in 2005) the former president of Sunstorm, Anthony Campiti, discovered a CD labeled "Add-on archive 1". Surprisingly it contained the thought to be lost add-on, Wanton Destruction . He quickly contacted 3D Realms (developer of original Shadow Warrior) about this, and a few days later Wanton Destruction was released as freeware by 3D Realms.
