Earthrise is different than most MMOs, and a lot different than I thought it would be. It's part MMO, part classic RPG, part economic simulation with a bit of shooter thrown in for fun. The results are arguably positive. I had a blast with the game's deep progression system, but began to hate the game each time I had to use the combat system. While it won't replace anyone's World of Warcraft time, it's likely to be a worthwhile diversion.

The key word with Earthrise is ‘potential’, the game has bags of it and I really hope that the initial sever glitches never rear their ugly heads again and that Earthrise can fill a necessary gap in the genre. I understand, at the time of writing, that the game is offering the first month’s access for free? Iceberg Interactive are also offering a bonus, retail-exclusive, poster and map, you can buy Earthrise from their online shop:

Verdict? If you’re a casual gamer, Earthrise isn’t for you. If you’re hardcore, wait a few months for the bugs to be ironed out and for an economy to be established. If the stars align, Earthrise may be a hit by then.
There is a 50 dollar price tag on the game with another 15 bucks a month being forked out to play online. It's rather pricy for a game whose cons out weigh the pros. Amazing art and scenery, good soundtrack and the mildly boring character creation doesn't rectify the cliché story, somewhat laggy and glitchy gameplay, and the iffy crafting system. Still, at least it's an attempt to get away from all the elves and trolls out there in the MMO realm. And for that alone, some of you may want to give it a try.

So the real question to this all is: should I buy this game? The well-publicized performance issues aside, Earthrise itself is just actually a rather bland game. There is nothing on offer here that we haven't seen a thousand times before but done with more inspiration and ambition. Masthead have created something which harkens back to the past and does just that; there is no nod to refinement within the genre or even progressing the sandbox their game purports to be. Personally I wish that we will see a small-time developer with the desire to make something 50% old and 50% new and do away with this full-loot PvP nonsense that bogs most games down. So in closing if you enjoy grinding for days straight for no real reward other than the knowledge that you have spent a million or so battle-points - go ahead and fill your boots. For anyone else? Wait until more unique titles to hit the market.

And the biggest crime of all: Masthead is asking you to pay a subscription fee of $14.99 for one month of access ($35.90 for three) for a laggy, tedious game that feels like it’s not finished. Most of Earthrise‘s minor problems wouldn’t hurt so much if the game was free to play, but charging a fee for a game in this condition is highway robbery. I played the game for many hours before I met another human player; maybe word got around.
