Half-Life: Alyx is one of the most richly detailed and immersive VR games to date, and a stunning take on the iconic franchise for virtual reality; City 17 and the sci-fi conflict at its core are incredibly well-realized throughout. Though it's slower than the run-and-gun pace of the originals, Alyx feels like a Half-Life game through and through as it successfully shifts between combat, exploration, puzzles, and even some notable horror. While the game doesn't offer much in the way of mechanical innovation, and the roster of weapons and enemies left something to be desired, Valve has polished the game to a bright sheen, the result of which is an absolute must-play experience.

Half-Life : Alyx est bel et bien le nouveau porte-Ă©tendard de la rĂ©alitĂ© virtuelle. Il s'agit lĂ  d'un titre majeur, pour ne pas dire rĂ©volutionnaire, comme l'ont Ă©tĂ© Half-Life et Half-Life 2 Ă  leur Ă©poque. Valve a raison de s'ĂȘtre lancĂ© dans ce secteur, il n'y a qu'avec la VR qu'on peut dĂ©sormais innover sensiblement et pousser les jeux-vidĂ©o dans une nouvelle Ăšre. Pendant plus de 10 heures de jeu, on vit les aventures Ă  la fois horrifiques, surnaturelles et de science-fiction de Alyx, comme si on y Ă©tait. Cependant, le jeu se rĂ©serve plutĂŽt aux amateurs de jeux d'horreur, les seuls qui auront peut-ĂȘtre le courage de surmonter certaines sĂ©quences ultra-flippantes faisant notamment Ă©cho Ă  d'autres jeux du mĂȘme type, Resident Evil et The Last of Us en tĂȘte. Half-Life: Alyx is a superb experience that I wish didn’t have such a barrier to experience, but it really does need to be experienced. It may not fully impress VR enthusiasts with its gameplay rules, but it offers so much more to the VR space. It’s refreshing to have a game that focuses on telling a full fledged story experience on a platform that is mostly stretching its legs with gameplay tech demos. It just so happens that this full fledged story is also a Half-Life game that also lives up to its predecessors and ties in nicely with them.

Aber auch abseits von der reinen VR-Faszination macht Half-Life: Alyx so vieles richtig. City 17 fĂŒhlt sich so an, wie ich es erhofft habe, ich habe sofort den Half-Life-Vibe in mir gespĂŒrt. Die Sounds, die Optik, alles stimmt. Anders als mit Half-Life 2 kam bei mir auch keine Langeweile auf, weil sich Abschnitte nicht wie Kaugummi zogen. Das Pacing ist nahezu perfekt. Und in Sachen Story und Fan-Service drĂŒckt das Ding genau die richtigen Knöpfe zur richtigen Zeit.

Half-Life: Alyx is billed as a VR return to the series, and that's exactly what it delivers. It does what Half-Life has historically done well, and without the clouding of nostalgia or unhelpful notions of what constitutes "revolutionary" design, it ranks alongside Half-Life 2. It is a full-length VR experience that both needs to be in VR, but that uses the tech to more strongly evoke the same feelings you got with a mouse and keyboard years ago. There are some small flaws that are no more annoying than over-long sewer odysseys or having to crouch jump were in past games, and its spectacle hits the hardest of any in the series. It sets Half-Life up for a compelling future—here's hoping we see it.

WĂ€hrend der mitreißenden Story fĂŒhlt sich ĂŒber 15 Stunden so vieles so gut, intuitiv und „richtig“ an - von der beeindruckenden Inszenierung mit seiner bombastischen Kulisse ĂŒber den inspirierenden Einsatz der Bewegungssteuerung bis hin zu spannenden KĂ€mpfen und vielen gelungenen 3D-Puzzles. Daher verzeihe ich dem Titel auch kleine SchwĂ€chen wie den Bossmangel oder die frustigen, teils fehlerhaften Schleich-Passagen in der Wodka-Destillerie. Das Schönste an Half-Life: Alyx ist aber, dass es endlich wieder ein Entwickler geschafft hat, seine mechanisch vielversprechenden Experimente in ein richtig professionelles Spiel zu verwandeln! Weniger ist manchmal mehr - das zeigt sich hier vor allem beim gelungenen Handling des ĂŒberschaubaren Arsenals. (...)
The gameplay itself is nearly perfectly paced as well, with exploration leading to confrontation and then scavenging for parts and ammo, and everywhere there’s something new to pick up and play with. I took my time with Half-Life: Alyx, partly due to limited hours in the day but mostly because each new area was a joy to thoroughly explore, sifting through the wreckage, corpses and otherwordly fungus to turn up the tools of survival. Half-Life: Alyx is an incredible journey, worth every second of the nineteen hours from start to epic finish, and an adventure worthy not only of the Half-Life name but also the enhanced expectations that grew during the series’ thirteen year absence.

(...) Klar, das etwas altbackene Design ist zum großen Teil Absicht und ich empfinde eine BeschrĂ€nkung auf wenige, aber gut funktionierende Elemente per se als eine gute Sache. Aber viele Momente fĂŒhlen sich aber nicht nostalgisch-simpel, sondern schlichtweg belanglos an. Jedes Mal, wenn ich wieder mit meinem Multi-Tool ein uninteressantes „RĂ€tsel“ lösen musste, wĂŒnschte ich mich insgeheim aufs heimische Sofa und in die Unterwasserwelt Rapture aus Bioshock zurĂŒck. Viele der Makel, die ich an Half-Life: Alyx sehe, werden durch den VR-Faktor ausgeglichen, aber eben nicht alle. Die Schießereien machen Spaß, sie sind aber nur ein Teil des Gesamtpakets. In Sachen Storytelling ist Valve zwar nach wie vor ein Meister seines Metiers, was mich gemeinsam mit einigen wirklich sehr kreativen Momenten bei der Stange hielt. Soll heißen: EnttĂ€uscht hat mich Alyx nicht, aber eben auch nicht begeistert.

But mainly I just yearn for more Half-Life, in whatever form Valve wants to deliver it. It was about three hours after reaching the game's thrilling, won't-spoil-it, can't-wait-to-talk-about-it conclusion that a thought occurred to me: for a brief moment I had had a new Half-Life game to play, and now, again, I had not. I hope I don't have to wait for brain-computer interfaces to exist before the series returns again, because despite a handful of complaints, I still think Valve make the best first-person shooters around.

Half-Life: Alyx doesn't just retread what we've seen in previous games, and it proves it's possible to make a lengthy, big-budget VR title. For the sake of the Valve faithful, I still hope we end up seeing a Half-Life sequel for the masses. But for VR fanatics, Half-Life: Alyx is exactly what they've been waiting for.

But Half-Life is back, and Valve has finally released another AAA single-player game, something many of us doubted the company ever would, or even could, do again. The impossible has already been achieved, and the fact that it’s happening in VR only makes it more novel. Valve has succeeded at just about every goal it must have had for this project. The only thing left is whether hardcore fans will be willing to buy, and use, a virtual reality headset in order to learn what happens next in the world of Half-Life. The good news is that those who do will experience what is likely the best VR game released to date.
