The Escapist (Mar 23, 2011)
The series has scaled down from Empire but lost none of the drama or excitement. The smaller scale makes it easier to appreciate all the things the game does right.
The A.V. Club (Mar 28, 2011)
Shogun 2’s only major flaws are outside the game. Shogun 2 is much less friendly to modders than the series has been in the past; the hardware requirements (and consequent loading times) seem a little bit high; and occasionally drop-in battles are hard to find. Yet, within the game, Shogun 2 serves as the culmination of all of the Total War series’ good ideas through the years. It’s the ideal example of evolution trumping revolution in creating great video games.

Game Shark (Mar 23, 2011)
Either playing solo, with friends or against them, Shogun 2 is the pinnacle of the Total War series. This is how you pay homage to a brilliant game that started a franchise, and I wouldn’t be upset after seeing what the developer has done here if we saw remakes of Rome or even another Medieval Total War. Whichever direction The Creative Assembly manages to go, I am officially back on the bandwagon.
1UP (Mar 21, 2011)
Shogun 2 has a lot in common with Starcraft II. Both games are at once reinventions and faithful recreations of their core values. Both are opulent, sleek, full of content and personality, and carefully built to foster and grow multiplayer communities over the long run. Today, it snows in hell, pigs fly, and Creative Assembly finally takes its place alongside Blizzard as the creator of a polished, smart, generous, elegant, and bold strategy game.
G4 TV: X-Play (Mar 31, 2011)
In any review of an RTS not developed by Blizzard, this is typically the point where, after extolling all of the virtues of the game for a dozen paragraphs, the writer says something like, “With all of that said, it’s not the sort of title that will appeal to most gamers, but the faithful will really love it.” Not this time. Shogun 2 is a real-time strategy game that not only deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Starcraft II, it’s earned a spot on the pedestal next to it.

Going back to its roots seems to have had the effect of revitalizing the Total War series. After a couple less-than-stellar outings in Napoleon: Total War and Empire: Total War, the return to the sengoku era of Japan’s feudal times has renewed the series in a way that any PC gamer should appreciate.
I can’t put it any plainer than this: CA learned from its mistakes and made a masterpiece of strategy gaming. If I don’t play it for the 300 hours I put into Medieval 2: Total War, it’s only because I put 300 hours into Medieval 2: Total War (a three-year old doesn’t help, either). Everything is better, and most importantly, not so much because it’s “bigger,” but because they refined and streamlined in all of the right places.

Total War may be one of the more complex series out there, and in the past there have been many reasons to avoid it-- mainly stemming from the fact that at times it could feel unapproachable through simply the amount of choices given. The hardcore have always had it as a staple to call home, but this time around it feels as if everything finally met in exactly the right spots, and enough assistance that anyone can get into it if they want. For anyone that has a computer that can run this game, they owe it to themselves to go out and buy it and enjoy the subtle wonders that it has hidden inside.

Game Informer Magazine (Mar 11, 2011)
Less truly is more when it comes to Total War. Shogun 2, with a smaller scale and tighter focus, boasts the best gameplay and design of any entry in the franchise. I can’t imagine a realistic way that The Creative Assembly could have made a better case to win back fans put off by Empire (of which I wasn’t one, though I understand the complaints many Total War fans have of that entry). It has made the game more approachable to new players without sacrificing the franchise’s soul.
Softpedia (Mar 22, 2011)
Total War: Shogun 2 is the best game in its series since the introduction of the 3D strategic map with Rome: Total War. The Artificial Intelligence that guides the enemy is the biggest booster to the quality of the game, as it manages to provide a good challenge for the player and make the tactical engagements interesting in the long term. The presentation of Shogun 2 is another strong point, although a bit dented by some issues with the graphical quality, which are supposed to be fixed soon. It's a pleasure to go back to Japan and have such a choice of factions to play around with, suited for a variety of play concepts. Shogun 2 managed to create a lot of narratives in each campaign and there's no point where the game becomes frustrating or unmanageable.
GamingBolt (Mar 23, 2011)
The team at Creative Assembly have truly whipped up a masterful game this time round. Setting out to restrain some of the excesses of previous titles, Shogun 2 takes a step back and retreads the ground of its youth in Feudal Japan. A game as smoothly coded as it is streamlined, it is easily the most immersive Total War since Rome and will delight long-time fans of the series and invigorate an entirely new set of followers.
ZTGameDomain (Apr 05, 2011)
Other than a few minor issues, I had a blast with the game. While it stuck to what Empire: Total War did and didn’t come up with a lot of new things, it was still a lot of fun to play. If you have the dough, you should pick this up.
Impulse Gamer (Mar, 2011)
In conclusion, Total War Shogun 2 is definitely a must have game for those who enjoy turn-based games, RTS or the original Total War games. It's huge improvement over its predecessors and from the very first moments of the game to the last battle of Kyoto, you will be captivated and wanting more. There is a sense of satisfaction when you finish the game at just how good the journey was but best of all, there is an engaging multiplayer mode that opens up Shogun 2 for additional play. It may be a war game but everything in the middle has been included, from your citizens to their religion, geishas to monks and an insightful tech tree, it all comes together perfectly. It's a game to die for!
Spazio Games (Mar 11, 2011)
93 (Apr 30, 2011)
Shogun 2 seems to be the best Total War yet. It’s very complex, really challenging for a beginner, but also simpler in terms of interface to attract new virtual strategists. The replay value is almost infinite for a fan, but for newcomers there are at least 10 campaigns for each major clan. The mix of turn based strategy and real time battles is still wonderful, but the need to balance timing and aggression is more important than ever. Aggressive players will feel a little cheated, while diplomats will hate Realm Divide stage. Still, Total War was always about realism and the AI’s scripted actions make logical and historical sense. Add here the detailed visuals, the mirroring of the terrain into battles and the exquisite soundtrack and, even if there are no more huge continents, nor dozens of nations to choose from, Shogun 2 isn’t small at all. Quite the contrary, it’s a remake and a totally new game at the same time.
92 (Mar 14, 2011)
Semplicemente promosso.
PC Gamer (Mar 11, 2011)
Shogun 2 demonstrates an admirable re-setting of Total War’s sights. It’s a tighter, more focused experience than the continental sprawl of Empire and Napoleon, sacrifices none of their intricacy, and brings improved AI to the battlefield. In the final count, it’s consistently thrilling, grand in scope, surprisingly atmospheric, and bloody hard to put down.
Hooked Gamers (Mar 21, 2011)
The grand scale and intense detail of Total War: Shogun 2 is completely unmatched by any game in the genre. Both the turn-based mode and the real-time battlefield mode work extremely well and put the gamer in total control. The full Feudal Japan experience is gained through the splendid visuals and authentic instrumental music. The AI too, has few issues to this point, giving novice gamers a chance of victory on the easiest level, but giving experienced Total War campaigners more than a headache on the more difficult levels. In fact, the only real issue I have had with the game is the minute text, at times making it hard to read. But for a game with such scale, this is but a trivial gripe, and one that could no doubt be fixed if I just looked into the options a bit more. If you have been a fan of the Total War series, this is definitely a must-get, and for any other strategy gamer, you would be wise not to let this one slip past you.
GamingXP (Mar 26, 2011)
Game Kudos (Apr 13, 2011)
Shogun 2 is a terrific gaming experience. If you're a casual gamer or a strategy fan who has overlooked the Total War series (where the hell have you been?), this is definitely the Total War game to get. The factions vary from the beginner friendly Shimazu, tucked away in a neat corner of Japan, to the landlocked and enemy surrounded Takeda, so there's always a point of entry, no matter your skill or experience. The game is a solid all-rounder and definitely shouldn't be overlooked by anyone with an interest in the genre, or Japanese history, for that matter.
AusGamers (Apr 05, 2011)
It’s not a game for the feint-hearted, and you’ll be investing many, many hours if you play the campaign the way it’s meant to be played. The new multiplayer stuff is excellent and almost a reason to purchase the game alone, will the other bells and whistles equally add to the value of the product. There’s absolutely no question this is the best in the series, I just can’t see where the team go from here. Total War fans or strategy fans looking for something to invest heavily in need look no further than here. Highly recommended.
The Telegraph (Mar 28, 2011)
Strategy fans already know they’ll like it. But if you’ve even suspected you might be a strategy fan if only the right game would come along, Shogun 2 is most likely it.
90 (Mar 11, 2011)
A brilliant reinvention of the series that maintains the epic of scale of battles and yet increases the accessibility and focus.
Inside Gaming (Mar 22, 2011)
There are some genuine issues with the game, mostly to do with the AI and networking. There is also little that's brand-new here: if you already tried Total War and disliked it, there’s nothing that’s going to convert you. Shogun 2 is arguably the same basic game we’ve been playing for 11 years now, but also the result of 11 years of experimentation, polish, and perfection, and the leanest, meanest, and best Total War game ever. If you’re a fan of turn-based empire games, you'll love Shogun 2 for its deep strategic dilemmas and easy-to-use controls. If you’re a fan of military history and tactics, you'll adore commanding thousands of troops in realistic battle simulations. If you like samurai, there are literally thousands here for you to play with. If you’ve never played a Total War game before, but ever had even the slightest interest in strategy games, you owe it to yourself to pick up this game and see just how many times you can say “One more turn” into the wee hours of the night.
XGN (Apr 23, 2011)
There's so much more to mention, as always, but time has ruthlessly stabbed us through the chest, bringing this review to an end. Total War: Shogun 2 is yet another tour de force from Creative Assembly, brilliant in nearly every way and packed full of new features to delight the veteran player. All in all, it's another triumph.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Mar 12, 2011)
CPU Gamer (Apr 18, 2011)
It's a Total War game, so this is going to last you for a bit. Shogun 2 represents the culmination of Creative's past experiences. It is refined, lean, smartly designed, and still an epic, where tales of your conquests can be so exciting that that alone could warrant a purchase. The possibilities of where Total War can go from here are exciting, but for now, we'll just have to settle with Shogun 2, which ain't that bad of a game.
Cheat Happens (Mar 30, 2011)
Shogun 2: Total War is simply an incredible game that easily tops anything that came before it in the Total War series. It may feature a smaller setting, but make no mistake; it's incredibly large in pretty much everything it does. Shogun 2 is a bold, intimate and truly impressive work of gaming magic. To put it most simply, you don't want to miss the latest installment of the Total War series.
90 (Mar 25, 2011)
Shogun II: Total War completely manages to live up to the high expectations. We get an excellent mix of old and new features, more strategic depth and immersion in 16th Century Japan as cherry on the pie. And most important: Shogun II is a very fun game to play.
Gameplanet (Mar 21, 2011)
When announcing this game last year, the Creative Assembly stated they’d set out to create what they called “the Zen of the Total War series” – a title with none of the superfluous or poorly implemented features that have put just the slightest limp in the franchise’s indomitable march. Shogun 2 is a tour de force, plunging even the most detached and practical of real-time strategy fans into the heady waters of the Shengoku Jidai.
GameTrailers (Mar 24, 2011)
With Shogun 2, Creative Assembly proves it can move forward by taking a step back. There may not be any truly revolutionary additions here, but the tightly-focused map, extensive streamlining, and rich opportunities for strategic gameplay inject a welcome freshness into the series. Considering that its only glaring downside is the unstable multiplayer implementation, Shogun 2 may very well rank as the best of the Total War games.
Gameswelt (Mar 25, 2011)
GamesRadar (Mar 28, 2011)
Creative Assembly trimmed some of the fat while boosting the flavor to make Total War: Shogun 2 one of the tastiest entries in the franchise yet. It’s much more accessible than the last few Total War games without sacrificing any depth or strategy. If you’ve been holding off on the series due to its complexity, Shogun 2 is a great place to jump right in. Simply put: it’s an awesome game.
GameSpot (Mar 17, 2011)
Shogun 2's delightful and all-encompassing world, coupled with its excellent production values, artful interface, deep strategic campaign, and thrilling real-time battles, makes it more impressive than its predecessor was a decade ago. Its only real flaw is the stability issue that occurred almost exclusively during multiplayer campaigns. Overall, Shogun 2 is just about everything you could want from a strategy game and is easily the apex of the Total War series up to this point.
90 (Mar 14, 2011)
Zugreifen!
90 (UK) (Mar 11, 2011)
Those expecting revelatory improvements in areas like AI may be mildly disappointed by Shogun 2. Those after a sumptious, weekend-whittling strategy epic heaving with flavour and challenge can reach for their uchi-bukuro with confidence. This is a corker.
90 (Mar 14, 2011)
Game Watcher (Mar 11, 2011)
The Total War Community, especially in recent years, has become a bit hard to please. We're confident though that this will meet most of your expectations. Given the nature of the franchise, don't expect a ton of depth on the scale that Paradox manages, but there's enough here to play around with. This is the most fully featured Total War to date, and a great homage to the game that launched the series. There's more we haven't talked about, but if we told you everything about the game then there wouldn't be any surprises left would there? If you pre-ordered Shogun 2, good for you, if you didn't, this will be well worth your money, even on launch day.
TotalVideoGames (TVG) (Mar 11, 2011)
Shogun 2 is a homecoming for The Creative Assembly; an opportunity to show how far the series has come in the ten years since its inception and, as far as we're concerned, it's a homecoming of ticker-tape parade proportions. This latest Total War marks a peak in the series not so much for its landmark features but for the amount of love and sheer dedication that's been applied to the setting. Truly, it's a beautiful recreation of Feudal Japan with gameplay to fit that billing.
90 (Mar 15, 2011)
Shogun 2 is a worthy successor to the original and shows that Creative Assembly has no desire to stop making great strategy games. It's wonderfully colourful and completely unique, and it should provide the usual hundreds of hours of gameplay for the hardcore. Those worrying about a retrograde step being taken for the series shouldn't have done so - it's a classic, no question.

Longtime fans will surely find a lot that's familiar in Shogun 2, but will also find Creative Assembly's most polished, well-presented and playable version of its Total War franchise. Shogun 2 is an expertly tuned turn-based strategy game filled with exhilarating real-time tactical battles against a capable artificial intelligence or others online. With a gigantic multiplayer suite and fantastic visuals and sound, Shogun 2 is a high point for the Total War series, featuring a staggering attention to detail and immensely satisfying gameplay.

MMGN (Mar 30, 2011)
It's not every day we are delivered an almost perfect game, but Total War: Shogun 2 is a shining example of its genre. The slick and stylish presentation backed up by accessible yet deep gameplay mechanics is what really drives the experience home. Not to mention some fantastic multiplayer options, this is definitely a game worthy of a purchase for fans of the genre.
Brash Games (Mar 28, 2011)
It’s a far cry from what Creative Assembly provided ten years ago, in those early days of the Total War name. Where now you’d expect a developer to slow down and loose interest in a series as popular and long lasting as this, it’s that care and love for improving on a well worn formula that marks each release of these games with excitement. A decade on, and Shogun 2 proves that Creative Assembly have little interest to watch their beloved series fade out. If this is what we can expect from future releases of Total War games, it’ll be interesting to see what the next ten years bring.
Mana Pool (Apr 22, 2011)
If you’re a fan of the series, wait no longer and go buy Shogun 2 right now. It’s by far the best game in the entire series and truly a pleasure to play. If you haven’t played a Total War game before but have an interest in either the Sengoku period in Japan or this sort of gameplay, it’s very much worth giving the series a try. I’ve seen Shogun 2 sold for £17 for the Limited Edition, so there isn’t really a reason not to start the series right here! If you like strategy games and have the remotest interest in the medieval and/or Japanese period – go and buy this immediately!
Ironhammers (Mar 29, 2011)
If you’ve ever enjoyed a PC strategy game I’d say you have to give this one a go — and if you’ve never played a Total War game before, I think this is the time to give it a try. The Japanese setting and the thorough introductions for new players make this a perfect opportunity. As a long term fan of the Total War series I can safely say that this is about as good as it gets, I’m still not decided whether I prefer it to the original, but that’s probably just nostalgia!
Game Over Online (Jul 04, 2011)
I did find the Japanese accented English narration to be an annoyance. Given the game has subtitles anyway, it would have been far more effective for the pre-battle speeches and advisors to simply speak the native tongue. This doesn’t take away anything from the developer’s love of the source material. It’s clear they didn’t revisit Shogun simply because someone in marketing thought it was a good idea to cash in on an old game design. There is a je ne sais quoi elegance on how the game is presented and how well put together the game as an entire corpus is. Although it’s still mired by some version 1.0 bugs, Shogun is highly playable and deserves a place on any Total War fan’s hard drive.

Gut so.
Cheat Code Central (Mar 15, 2011)
Of course, as with any strategy game, it will take a few months for players to exploit all of Shogun 2's vulnerabilities and see how bad they are. But in its early hours, at least, this is a solidly constructed, brilliantly conceptualized strategy game that forces you to make meaningful decisions almost constantly. If you've been wondering when Total War would finally return to its roots and fix many of its longtime problems, your wait is over. Shogun 2 does both.
Ten Ton Hammer (Mar 30, 2011)
So does Shogun 2 live up to the Total War franchise name? Absolutely! Returning to the warring states of Japan and simplifying the formulas slightly was a great move for the series, and with a fresh coat of glossy paint for graphics, it’ll give a new generation of gamers a taste of how massive battles were born with Total War. It might take every last bit of power for your computer to make it shine, but samurai combat and ninja assassinations never looked better. You don’t need a geisha’s help to convince you that this sequel is worthy.

3D Juegos (Mar 11, 2011)

Total War: Shogun 2 is a fantastic return to form for Creative Assembly. Not all of the series’ problems have been stamped out, as the AI will still renege on agreements and declare war without cause, and some of the new features land with a thud (Realm Divide), but the package is such a step up from the last few years that those are small annoyances when compared to the positives of an improved AI, streamlined interface, and character customization options. Multiplayer is equally strong with co-op campaigns that offer a lot to the patient, and the biggest surprise, Avatar Conquest, is as addictive as it is unbalanced. It might not be quite as polished as a daimyo’s set of ancestral armor, but it can certainly hit the spot.
Shogun 2: Total War is a great addition to the Total War series, and is definitely one to pick up if you’re a fan of Sengoku-era games, or have the slightest interest in RTS titles.
ripten (Apr 04, 2011)
That’s the beauty of Shogun 2. With the constant leveling of units, planning between seasons for optimum efficiency and using Diplomacy and Agents to your advantage, it’s truly a customizable experience. Though the landmass is smaller, it leaves a more focused feeling for the series. The game can be painfully slow in certain spots (even for a Total War game) and the AI sometimes has a mind of it’s own, but Total War fans will feel satisfied with Shogun 2 and then some. It retains all the hallmarks of the series like interesting Historical moments, precise tactical gameplay and battles of a grand scale, but improves upon subtle things like managing your populace and making your Generals feel more unique and hardened. So study up Sun Tzu’s art of war, strap on your helmet and get ready to storm the cherry blossom littered grounds of Japan – Just don’t expect to see any shields.
GameFocus (Apr 05, 2011)
Shogun 2 is a wonderful example of deep rich strategic gameplay with both battles and resource/province management requiring more than just research upgrade clicks. The graphics authentically suit the time period and, even at the lower settings, aren’t hard on the eyes, though it might take a bit to load fully on older machines. The music and sound also fit the setting of the game very well and add to the atmosphere of both play and battle. I definitely recommend Shogun 2 for strategy fans looking for a new title to test their general skills. There’s a lot of replay value here as no two campaigns will run the same way twice with challenges presenting themselves as you fight your way across Japan.

The Guardian (Mar 18, 2011)
Shogun 2 is a magnificent looking game with huge play and replay value. In terms of ambition and progression for the series, it arguably takes half a step back, but the huge leap forward in graphics and gameplay more than makes up for it.
Thunderbolt Games (Apr 14, 2011)
These frustrations aside, Shogun 2 is a triumphant game. It’s wonderfully complex and detailed, and vibrantly decorated with historical trappings that will satisfy anyone with a passing interest in military strategy. While the presentation and multiplayer are a little rough around the edges, there’s more than enough content to make the game a more than worthwhile experience. It’s dense in the best sense of the word - a classic title that yields more and more excitement the further players explore.than enough content to make the game a more than worthwhile experience. For the most part, Shogun 2 is a solid entry into the long-standing series with a more cohesive feel than has been present for awhile. Much as it's got a narrower focus than recent entries that's in no way a complaint; the game feels more stable and sensible than it has for awhile. Certainly, if you're the type who liked the gargantuan maps and vast unit lists of recent titles, then you're going to be a tad disappointed, but others will thoroughly enjoy what's on offer here. There's less breadth, but no less depth. This is Creative Assembly resisting the urge to make huge innovations, instead polishing the features that were brought in with recent releases to make a Total War game that works better than the series has in years. I approve.
PixlBit (Aug 20, 2011)
For the most part this game is very similar to past Total War games. This isn't a bad thing, though, as those games have all been good. This iteration's additions only enhance the experience. Replay value has been increased with a new multiplayer mode. Multiplayer has the usual single battle skirmishes as well as its own separate campaign, and an avatar mode in which you gain new units by leveling up. If you like PC strategy games, Total War games, and don't absolutely hate ninjas, Total War: Shogun 2 is a good choice.
Aside from these issues, I found Total War: Shogun 2 to be a solid strategy game. It’s not quite up to the hype, thanks to problems in multiplayer, but no one should be fooled into thinking that it’s not a good game. If you like the series, pick up a copy on Steam for $49.99. Just wait to do multiplayer until the game is patched.

Bit-Tech (Mar 11, 2011)
Shogun 2 is presented with such style and grace that it's still engaging and fun. For hardcore strategy players, the need to balance units will lead to more taxing encounters online, even if the singleplayer game doesn't scratch your armchair-general itch unless you crank the difficulty all the way up.
GameSpy (Mar 14, 2011)
Overall, Shogun 2 is a vast improvement from recent Total War missteps, and revitalizes the glory of the original Shogun, while adding so much new and interesting content that you might not even remember said original. And this one, finally, does right by newcomers, making things as easy and as polished as a game of StarCraft II. If you don't dig Shogun 2, then just go ahead and get out of the genre altogether. I hear Maple Story still needs players...

We Got This Covered (Mar 16, 2011)
All in all the game is very enjoyable and a must buy for Total War fans, the multiplayer alone is a great selling point. Taking all into account besides graphics, as I feel at this point in time graphics are all spectacular and we’re used to it, I’m going to have to recommend a purchase for this one.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Mar 30, 2011)
Rock, Paper, Shotgun (Mar 11, 2011)
So, final words: a tight, coherent Total War offering. It’s a bit of a system hog, I suspect. My God-like monster PC chuntered a bit on the very highest settings and the biggest battles, so although the game can look dreamy, I should imagine it’s going to have to be scaled way back for the average gaming PC. Apparently the DX11 support is in a follow up patch in the coming weeks, too, and I should imagine there will be some bugs emerge in that time. I haven’t found anything game-breaking (just a glitch or two), although some other press types are reporting occasional CTDs. The game is out on the 15th, and there’s no good reason not to buy it. I mean I guess there are reasons, as I’ve outlined, but anyway, just not good ones. You’ll make your own mind up.
