The game starts with the usual logo screens, player id creation/selection and a warning about memory card usage. All this is followed by the menu screen

At the start of the game only one level is available

Each part of the game begins with an animated sequence In the first level dad goes off to work leaving his kids behind to take care of themselves.

The big kid is a bully and sends his brother Danny into the basement inside the dumb waiter. Danny is the player's character to start with. The load screen shows the controller configuration

Danny explores the basement and later the rest of the house. Some crates can be destroyed by kicking them. They may/may not have things inside like those big 'Z' tokens

As he is exploring and destroying crates Danny may find some big 'Z' tokens. This message explains what they are, its displayed when he finds the first one

Hidden somewhere in the house Danny finds Zathura - the board game that starts all the trouble Dialogue in cut scenes is repeated in the subtitles

After finding the board game Zathura Danny can continue to explore, looking for more tokens, or he can find his brother. When they meet there's a cut scene where Danny starts to play the game

The first game card Danny is awarded says 'Meteor Shower - Take Cover' While big brother shelters in the fireplace Danny hunts for his gerbil
