Born December 18, 1917 as Raiford Chatman Davis, his mother called him "R.C.", which in her southern drawl sounded like Ossie.
Ossie Davis has been an actor in television and motion pictures since the 1950's in a multitude of different roles. Additionally, he has written several books and directed film and TV projects. He and his wife, Ruby Dee, starred in the educational television show "'The Ruby Dee/Ossie Davis Story Hour", which he directed.
He and Ruby were named to NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame in 1989, and Ossie was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004.
