Andrew M. Silverstone DVM

Dr. Silverstone is the medical director of Veterinary Hospital of Virginia Beach, Virginia Beach, VA. In addition to helping dogs and cats, he enjoys working with exotic pets (turtles, birds, iguanas, fish, snakes, ferrets, geckos, chameleons, just to name a few). Before coming to Animal Care Clinic, Dr. Silverstone had the privilege of treating animals in many other settings. He was one of only a few veterinarians to receive a Cancer Research Training Award from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. As a Post Doctoral Fellow, he was part of a team that studied and developed a cure for an inherited form of cancer in dogs. A similar cancer occurs is children and was always fatal until his team developed this cure using bone marrow transplants.

Dr. Silverstone also had the opportunity to work with marine mammals, including dolphins and manatees, as well as sharks, sting-rays, sloths, toucans, during his time as a Research Fellow with Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.

He is a Veteran of the United States Army Reserve, Veterinary Corps and an Eagle Scout. While he was a veterinary student, Dr. Silverstone took the opportunity to take special training in treating cancer at the University of Wisconsin and North Carolina State University, as well as zoo animal medicine at the San Francisco Zoo. Dr. Silverstone is the current president of the Tidewater Veterinary Academy.
