Trivia

Inspiration

Inspiration for the game was based on this walker used in previous DMA Design's game Blood Money.

Development

The game was ultimately in development for three or four years (development started in August 1989). The Walker project went into limbo for a year or two, during which time someone in DMA Design came up with the idea for Lemmings. Finally, Walker was released in 1993.

Until a couple of months before its release, the game was to feature two different types of levels, alternate levels being an underground platform shooters where you have to plant several time bombs to destroy the enemy base. However, they decided that this section wasn't up to standard, and decided to stick to the basic shoot-em-up.

Walker's Head

Scott Johnston rendered the head of the Walker using a small 3D program he wrote, to get all the different positions right. He then went in with a pixel drawing program to touch up the result.

Ingame Speech

The speech was recorded by Neill Glancy in Ian Dunlop's back garden. He used a walkie talkie to give authentic crackle and tone while Ian Dunlop sampled the speech inside his house.

Sega Mega Drive/Genesis port

Ian Dunlop worked on a port for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis but it was cancelled when he left DMA Design.
