Space Station Simulator

Description

Space Station Simulator is a single player educational title.

With this product the player can build their own space station using the component modules that, at the time this was released, were being constructed by various national space agencies. The player can choose between building a station of their choice or they can follow the official launch sequence and build a replica of the real thing. Once built the player can view the station from within and from space. Inside the station there are hotspots which bring up descriptions of key pieces of equipment.

The product contains copious help files that document the origins, purpose, power usage and weight of each module and the associated launch vehicles.
When it was released the game supported links to the Maris web site which, in addition to providing information about the game, linked to other space station resources. Sadly in 2015 this is no longer operational.

This was a complete let down

The Good
To be honest there wasn't a great deal I liked about this game. Apart from plugging together modules to make a model of the station and looking at it from all angles there's really not a lot to do apart from read the help files.

The Bad
I thought I was getting a space station simulation. I was seduced by the packaging's blurb "Experience the thrill of living and working in space" etc. What I got was a repackaged, re-issue of a WIN 95 game that itself was a conversion of an earlier WIN 3.1 title. It's obviously an old title because everything in it refers to events that have yet to happen, modules that have yet to be built.

The Bottom Line
This is called a simulation, it is not.
Back in its day this would have been interesting without being wonderful. Now it looks and feels really dated and there's really very little to do here.
Worth a look if you want to collect all things space related but otherwise avoid.

The original MARIS site for this product is no longer available however an archived copy exists. This would have been the site to which the game's internet function would have linked to. It describes the features of version 1.1, the WIN 95 version, and has links to related web sites. It also has a download section where the player could download the modules needed to build the Russian MIR space station
