Description

Scene It?: Comedy Movies is one of a series of games in the Scene It? series.

The box contains a folding game board, a DVD in a card slipcase, instructions, 100 trivia cards, 12 'Buzz' cards, four tokens, and two dice - one which selects the question category and one standard numbered die. In this version the four tokens are all made from yellow plastic, they are a banana skin, a rubber chicken, a joke glasses false nose & moustache set and a whoopee cushion (the only one with a label printed on it). There's also an advertising foldout listing other board games, mobile games and Facebook games.

The game follows the standard format of all Scene It? game with minor changes to the names of some parts, for example in this game the category die does not contain a Buzz symbol. Although the game's instruction screens all have an actor delivering the information in a voice-over and the movie clips include sound none of the questions are read out to the players. Questions are timed with the default for the trivia questions being thirty seconds though this can be shortened via a main menu option.

It is played on the standard Scene It? 'flex-time' game board so-called because of its novel feature, when there's not enough time/interest to play a full game it can be folded, thus reducing it's size so that a short game can be played. The player(s) must travel round the board to the 'WIN' area where they must answer an 'All Play To Win' challenge. If they are successful they win the game, if not they move to the outer Final Cut circle and must successfully answer three DVD challenge questions to win. It is possible for two players to answer an 'All Play To Win' question simultaneously, in this case the DVD Tiebreaker question/challenge is used.

The game is played with two dice, a six sided die that determines how far the player moves and an eight sided die which determines the question category the player will face. After the player has rolled both dice and moved their token they are asked a question, if successful they take another turn and continue to do so until they make an error. Players move before they attempt a question, the type of question the player will face is determined by the eight sided category die, they options are; 'My Play': this is a DVD challenge in which typically a movie clip is shown after which the player is asked a relevant question such as Name the movie/actor/character. Following this there is an 'All Play' question which any player can answer. + If the player who initially rolled the dice answers either the first or the second question correctly then their turn continues + If another player answers the 'All Play' question first and correctly then they have the option of moving two spaces or drawing a Buzz card. 'All Play': There are two All Play symbols on the category die, a question is asked and any player can answer, (if two player's shout the answer simultaneously then there is a DVD Tie Breaker option.) Typical questions include showing a movie clip and asking to name the film, one of the performers etc or they could be a series of clues to an actor or a film. + If the player who initially rolled the dice answers first and correctly then their turn continues + If another player answers first and correctly then they have the option of moving two spaces or drawing a Buzz card, control of the dice passes to the next player.

  • 'My Puzzle Challenges': This is a DVD puzzle question and the player needs the remote control to be able to play. Questions are multiple choice and include 'Which is the odd one out?' and 'Which item is missing from this picture' types of questions. If completed correctly the player's turn continues - if not then control of the dice passes to the nest player.
  • 'Buzz cards' are earned by answering another player's question - see above, every card carries a quotation from a film which loosely describes it's content. When one of these cards is acquired the player reads it as some cards are meant for immediate use and others are saved for later use. An example of a Buzz cards that are saved for later use are the "You'll shoot your eye out kid" - when any other player rolls a six this card is played causing the other player to stay put while the player holding this card moves six cells around the board.
  • 'Trivia Challenge': Here another player draws a Trivia Challenge card and reads the question. There are three categories of trivia question each represented by a distinct symbol on the category die while on the card there is one question for each symbol on one side with the answers on the reverse. If the player answers the question correctly their turn continues and they roll again. There are three categories of trivia question, Poo Culture - described as the 'Who What When & Why' questions; Songs & Slogans; and Take Three where the player is given three clues to solve There is also a more difficult "Hardy-Har-Hard" question which the player may opt to take, getting this question right allows the player to move an extra two spaces before continuing their turn

  • 'Players Choice': Where the player selects a trivia card or DVD category of their choice.

The game has three timed 'Bonus Activities' mode during which it presents a series of "Sketch It!", "Act It!", and "Say It!" questions for a large group to play by shouting out the answers, the board is not used in this mode. In the "Sketch It!" one player must draw something from a film, an example being a bottle of Soul Glo from 'Coming To America', and the other players must both guess the item and the film. The "Act It!" tasks are similar and usually involve movie titles. The tasks come with helpful suggestions such 'Put a bra on your head and create the perfect woman' which is meant to convey the film title 'Weird Science'. In the "Say It!" section one player must convey a movie title without mentioning any film title, actor, character, or director.

Finally there's a 'Party Mode' which plays an endless loop of questions of all types, sound clips, pixellated pictures, film clips, cryptic clues etc. Each question is preceded by an animation and is timed, players just shout out the answer, scoring is optional and the board is not used.
