Scene It?: Twilight
- Scene It?: Twilight (2009 on Wii, 2010 on Nintendo DS)
Description
Scene It?: Twilight is one of a series of games in the Scene It? series, the full game is intended for two to four players but has party-play options too. The voice acting is by Peter Facinelli who plays Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the film
The box contains a folding game board; a DVD in a book-fold card case; a single sheet of instructions - printed both sides; four tokens, two dice - one which selects the question category and one standard numbered die which determines how many places the player's token will move; four reference cards - one per player; thirty 'Fate' cards and one hundred trivia cards. In this version the four tokens are all made from metal, they are a house, a baseball, a grand piano, and a car. There's also a registration card and an advertisement for other Scene it? board games.
The game broadly follows the standard format of all Scene It? game, however there are changes to the way the game is played, some minor and some quite significant. Minor changes often occur from game to game and typically include the renaming of some game elements, for example in this game the Buzz symbol and Buzz cards have been replaced by Fate symbol and Fate cards. More significantly this game is not played on the standard Scene It? 'flex-time' game board but on a smaller board that is the equivalent of the short game in other Scene It? titles, another major change in the game is that Scene It?: Twilight consists of fifteen different pre-set games.
After the player has rolled both dice and moved their token round the board they are given their challenge, as indicated by the category die. If successful they take another turn and continue rolling the dice and moving until they either fail a challenge, roll the Fate card symbol or reach the STOP area of the board. The challenges are:* Trivia Card Challenge: there are three trivia symbols on the category die each of which corresponds to a symbol on the trivia card. When a player rolls one of these symbols another player takes a card from the trivia deck and reads the appropriate question, the answers are on the reverse of the card.
-
'DVD Challenge': there are three DVD challenge symbols on the category die. When rolled the player's use the DVD to fins out what the next question is and, because the DVD contains fifteen pre-set games, the players have no control over which type of challenge they face, the challenges are:
-
'Mini Game Challenges': these are two DVD puzzles which only the dice roller can attempt, in one the player must remember the order of nine pictures in a 3x3 grid while the second is a kind of shell game with a baseball underneath one of three baseball caps.
-
'Fate': There are two Fate symbols on the category die, when a player rolls one of them they draw a Fate Card, act on it and their turn ends. Players can also be forced to take a Fate card when another player wins an All Play challenge.
-
'My Play': In this challenge only the player who rolled the dice can answer.
-
'All Play': As the category name suggests any player can answer these questions, (if two player's shout the answer simultaneously then there is a DVD Tie Breaker option).
-
If the player who initially rolled the dice answers first and correctly then their turn continues.
-
If another player answers first and correctly then they have the option of moving two spaces or forcing another player to draw a Fate card, control of the dice passes to the next player.
-
Typical questions for the 'My Play' and 'All Play' categories are - Name the Location / Name the Character where players are shown a partially completed word grid like those used in Jeopardy
- Sequentials - putting scenes from the film in order - On Reflection - where the players are shown a distorted picture that gradually becomes clearer. - Other questions follow a clip from the film and can be 'Complete This Quote'; 'Who Said What'; an observation question based on the clip or detailed Twilight trivia knowledge such as 'Edward became a vampire in what year?
-
When a player reaches the 'STOP' area they face an 'All Play To Win' challenge. If the dice roller answers successfully they win the game, if they are unsuccessful they move from the STOP area to the outer ring of the Twilightning area (this is the equivalent of the Final Cut area in other games), players in the Twilightning area must successfully answer three DVD challenge questions to win. If another player answers 'All Play To Win' question successfully they can either move forward three places of force another player to take a Fate card.
The DVD also holds a 'New Moon' movie trailer has additional modes of play:* Shuffle Play: here the game asks a continuous series of questions for group/party play. The board is not used and anyone can shout out the answer.
-
Mini-Games: A continuous series of the mini games previously described.
-
Bonus Activities: there are three of these:
-
Which Cullen are you? - This single player activity is a personality quiz where the player answers five questions such as 'What do you think of when you think of love?' and 'What does family mean to you?' and the game matches the answers to a character from the series
-
Read My Mind - A five round, two player game where one player selects a picture from those shown on screen and the other has to guess their selection.
-
Scene It? Twilight Party - This is NOT a playable activity, it is a reference to a DVD file in .pdf format which contains party invitations, instructions on how to organise a party, recipes and so forth.
