Description official descriptions

Yuri's Revenge is the official expansion pack for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2.

The storyline picks up right where the canonical Allied ending from Red Alert 2 left off. While the Allies concentrated on regaining territory and fighting off forces loyal to the now former Soviet Premier Romanov, the latter's advisor Yuri secretly raised an army of his own, using his immense knowledge of psionics and genetic mutation. As Yuri announces his presence and plans, a global network of devices called psychic dominators comes online in an attempt to enslave the entire world. The American president Dugan orders an air strike to destroy one of these devices on Alcatraz island, and although the attack failed, a crashed Harrier damaged the device's power supply. As all other psychic dominators go online, the Allies attempt to power a time machine to stop these events from occurring. At this point in the storyline, the player chooses to side with the Allies, or to join the Soviets and steal the time machine to also defeat Yuri, but at the same time restore the Soviet Union to power. Yuri's army does not get a singleplayer campaign, which is the first and only time in a series where a playable faction does not get singleplayer content. The Allied and Soviet campaigns have 7 singleplayer missions each (total of 14).

The aforementioned Yuri's army is also the first time that a third faction is present and playable in the series, and is available in skirmish and multiplayer modes. Its technology is entirely separate from those of its rivals, and makes extensive use of mind control and various means of disabling enemy units and structures (e.g. Magnetrons can lift vehicles to their location, while Floating Discs can disable or otherwise exploit enemy structures while firing on units). Other factions also get new units and structures (particularly as the Soviets lost almost all technology related to Yuri's work), and all factions get a common late-game support power, the force shield. Tech hospitals now heal infantry automatically instead of having them enter the building, and several new tech buildings have been added - the machine shop, the secret lab, and the civilian power plant. New game modes have been added in multiplayer, and a new set of co-op missions has been made, including some for Yuri's army. Finally, most existing vehicles and naval units received unique voice response sets.

Absolutely fantastic step forward.

The Good
There was a big fuss about "Red Alert 2" and I was more than eager to get my copy of a Collector's Edition, but once I started to play the game I noticed Westwood slipped the crack on it a bit, more to the fact endings are nowhere near as interesting or greatly directed and thought of like in their previous C&C games. On top of that, there was barely any cinematic if you don't count the opening cinematic. Gameplay was fun, but something was still lacking... and until this add-on came out I had no idea what.

Yuri's Revenge took the term "add-on" one huge step forward, as giant as Firestorm in its own time. The game's story is nothing special, but it's compelling and briefings and cutscenes are much better than in the original. Seems like they put more effort into this one which by far could not be sold in as many copies as the original. Guess Westwood saved the day... which is unlike to what later happened with "C&C: Generals" that was fully under EA Pacific's hands.

I generally don't find traveling through time concepts to be executed ever too well, but this game did a magnificent job, not meddling too much with the fact itself and thus getting a brilliant comeback. Barry Corbin's back and the scene of president Dugan seeing him again in priceless. The general script for this game is way above RA2 ever presented us with. On top of it, there are tons and tons of cinematics and briefings that appear in-game on the radar screen which add dynamic feeling to the title and a fine touch of dramatic to the battlefield.

News structures are simply amazing, they took a lot of effort into adding as much new stuff as they can, and this time, added an entirely new side to play as, if only in multiplayer. Something we (and by that I mean I) heavily wanted in Firestorm add-on. Again, both campaigns are to play as Allies or Soviets, and third side consists of Yuri's mind-bended followers. His entire arsenal is new and that includes structures as well as units. Some are rather cool if I do say so myself, and abilities to use soldiers to enhance power output, produce clone units for the price of one, grind enemy tanks to get money out of it, use submarines equipped with long range water-to-surface missiles, take down enemy crafts with high velocity gattling guns, are just a tip of the iceberg.

The Bad
The game is addictive, highly playable, fun, devastating, and better than the one it's a mission pack for. Furthermore, fixes all the buggy stuff that occurred in RA2 and deploys a high level of fun, something that was really lacking in RA2 as it didn't seem inspired enough. As far as add-on go, this is by far the best one I've seen, on par with "Lord of Destruction" one for Diablo II.

Alas, can't say I'm too happy with the fact this was the last C&C RTS Westwood had worked on :(

The Bottom Line
What I expected from the original "Red Alert 2" is to be at least this good, instead, had to wait for an add-on. No doubt, well worth the wait, it's a blast as far as isometric real-time strategies go.

More proof that RTS games have fallen into a rut

The Good
The production values are good. The game has been thoroughly tested and retested, and is rock solid and is absolutely bug free.

The Bad
RTS games have fallen into a rut. Collect resources, build facilities and produce units, upgrade your forces and destroy your opponents. You know the routine, right? It's the same as in every other Red Alert or Warcraft and Starcraft game out there. Boring! Gaming used to be about innovation and pushing the envelope. RTS games such as Red Alert: Yuri's Revenge are anything but innovative.

The Bottom Line
It's another RTS game from Westwood Studios.

Trivia

In one interesting advertising gimmick, Westwood ran advertisements for a 1-900 number to Yuri's psychic hotline. The ad read that you could call 1-900-454-YURI and find out if domination is in your future. It is a real hotline set up for Yuri's Revenge, and I found it entertaining. Calling this number is $.95 a minute, but its only a message a few minutes long.

Delay

The game was originally scheduled to release in September 2001. However, it was delayed for some weeks because of the WTC attack. The reason for this is that, like Red Alert 2, the box art featured ruined buildings (this time in Los Angeles instead of New York). The cover was altered, but some markets did receive the original design.

Online servers

The game's online servers were migrated from the official Westwood Online infrastructure to the community-run XWIS (XCC WOL IRC Server), under approval and sponsorship from EA's German office on 6 October 2005. The Westwood Online domains have acted as a redirect to XWIS services since then, requiring no additional steps from the user to access the servers short of registering an account.

References

  • In version 1.000 of the expansion, in Allied mission 2 (Hollywood And Vain) there are three special civilians: Arnnie Frankenfurter, Sammy Stallion, and Flint Westwood, who join the player as controllable units. They are parodies of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Clint Eastwood, and have special soundbanks which are references to their movies. However, in version 1.001, they lost their respective names for unknown reasons (replaced with Hero, Cowboy, Bodybuilder, respectively), and share the soundbank with the regular G.I. unit.
  • In the first mission of the Soviet campaign, the player's taskforce needs to capture and use the Allied time machine in order to travel to the past and prevent Yuri from taking over the world. Once captured, the machine sends the Soviets too far back in time, and they have to fend off dinosaurs until the machine is recalibrated. This is most likely a reference to the hidden bonus missions from Command & Conquer: The Covert Operations where the player has to fight dinosaurs.
  • In the Soviet ending cutscene, Yuri explicitly uses the franchise name as part of his final taunt to the player.

Samples in soundtrack

The game's soundtrack has two sampled quotes from the 1957 film The Brain from Planet Arous - in the Brain Freeze track ("Your feeling of helplessness is your best friend, savage.") and Drok track ("The power of pure intellect."). They were taken from the same scene, about 40 seconds apart, and were licensed out from a sample library.
