Redneck Rampage

Xatrix heeft de Duke Nukem engine tot het uiterste gedreven en hem zo perfect benut dat het resultaat gewoonweg schitterend is. De commentaren van Leonard hebben me vaak hartelijjk doen lachen en de levels zijn gewoonweg geniaal. Het is niet zozeer de pure actie die je keer op keer naar deze titel zal doen teruggrijpen, als wel de geweldige humor en de prachtige lokaties. Absoluut een topper.

Redneck Rampage wird sicher neue Diskussionen darüber auslösen, wie geschmacklos Computerspiele sein dürfen. Vieles ist jenseits von Gut und Böse, aber das ironische Augenzwinkern der Designer ist nicht zu übersehen. Wer sich mit dem schmierigen Szenario im B-Movie-Stil nicht anfreunden mag, versäumt ein sehr gut gemachtes Ballerspiel mit intelligent designten Levels und witzigen Ideen für den Mehrspielermodus.

In fact, the only bad thing about Redneck Rampage is simply that at the end of the day, it's yet another 3D shoot 'em up. There's no real genre progression going on here, no major surprises. Just a good, strong exercise in farcical entertainment.

Redneck Rampage hæver sig over de fleste andre 3D-skydespil, og selv om der kun er 14 baner at kæmpe sig igennem, føler man sig absolut ikke snydt bagefter.

All in all Redneck Rampage is a pretty good game. Although the story might not be too developed (for some reason I like a damn good story), the graphics, setting and music will keep you in the Redneck groove for some time. Like a lot of first person shooters out there, Redneck Rampage could get old very quickly, but for the most part it's funny and entertaining as hell.

Gra została zrobiona na engine pochodzącym z gry Duke Nukem 3D i na pierwszy rzut oka klimatem przypomina jego parodię. Nie oznacza to, że gra jest od Duke'a gorsza, wręcz przeciwnie w wielu aspektach go przewyższa. Zdecydowanie lepsza jest grafika, na przykładzie której doskonale widać rok dzielący te dwie gry. Mimo iż świat w Rednecku również jest zbudowany ze sprite'ów, to wszystko jest jakby bardziej trójwymiarowe. Sekwencje ruchu postaci i zwierząt są dopracowane w wysokim stopniu, co niestety odbiło się na wymaganiach sprzętowych. Nie ma co marzyć o płynnej grze na komputerze 486. Znane z Duke'a melodyjki midi zostały wyparte przez dźwięk CD-Audio, a i maksymalna rozdzielczość wzrosła do 1600x1200.

I really enjoyed playing Redneck Rampage and will probably leave it on my hard drive for some time to come. Not because it takes the first person genre to a new level, though; it really doesn't do much of anything to move the genre forward. Redneck Rampage relies on the pre-established models of the first-person shooter. It introduces some nice twists, but it's still safely within the lines drawn by earlier, more innovative shooters. Redneck Rampage is simply an entertaining game, good for some mindless fun a couple of times a week and it does make me laugh. However, if you're looking for the best shooter for your money you're still better off picking up Quake. And Outlaws has much more to offer in creativity and innovation. Had Xatrix taken better advantage of the rural setting -- opening up the gaming environment to let you chase opponents through cornfields -- or used the rural setting as the basis for an original story, the game would score better than the 79 that I give it.

Otetaan Duken engine, valitaan pelimiljööksi käpykylä Yhdysvaltojen syvässä etelässä ja korvataan spritet sioilla, kanoilla ja farmariasuisilla maajusseilla. Lisätään pieruhuumoria, ja Doom-kloonien katras onkin karttunut Redneck Rampagella. Jiiihaaa.

Just when it seemed that publishers had shipped every possible variant of the first-person 3D shooter, Interplay has pulled the genre from the swamp. And they did it with redneck jokes. Redneck Rampage packages the Duke Nukem 3D engine with a low-concept theme - invading aliens are cloning backcountry hicks - that could have very easily fallen apart. But Redneck Rampage works on several levels - as a shooter, adventure, and humor title. This is a clever, fun, and challenging game with great characters, crisp sound effects, and inventive - though at times very frustrating - gameplay.

Scavenging these mediocre levels gets tiresome quickly, and shooting the waves of redneck clones, turd minions, and aliens fails to offset the boredom.

Redneck Rampage kommt trotz der witzigen, ländlichen Umgebung vom Spielspaß nicht annährend an das Vorbild von 3D Realms heran. Daß die Monster ungeheuer zäh sind, mag manchem Profi noch als Herausforderung gelten, doch auch ihre Feuerkraft ist dermaßen hoch, daß bereits zwei Treffer der kleineren Gegner unseren heldenhaften Farmer zu Boden schicken. Die Grafik könnte mich durchaus überzeugen, wenn das Spiel nicht einige Objekte so seltsam darstellen würde. Texturen, die wegen ihrer Zweidimensionalität leicht zu übersehen sind, haben die Programmierer in den Spielverlauf eingeflochten. Handelt es sich bei der einen Textur um eine simple Wandverzierung, kann eine andere plötzlich auf wundersame Weise benutzt werden.
