Let's face it, no matter how hokey some of those pimped-out cars look, you're still fascinated with the tuner culture. While the first Underground unquestionably appealed to that fascination, EA's nod to supped-up autos this year is a grand presentation of untamed horsepower, which successfully turns your fascination into an addiction.

Need for Speed: Underground, while very high on its ups, is not without its downs. The gameplay is utterly addictive, to put it short. I managed to pour 7 hours into the game, not realizing how much time I had actually spent. Right before I sat down to write this review, I spent another 3 hours playing the game, thinking I had played no more than 45 minutes tops -- it's almost magical when a game can do that to you. Even though the framerate can be funky here and there, and the game's visual style requires time to adjust, NFS: Underground is still a splendid looking title. If you're a racing fan, you absolutely must pick up Need for Speed: Underground. Oh, and if you happen to notice that a replay mode is missing from the game, you didn't get a defective copy. EA, stupidly, never implemented a replay mode into the game. Go figure.

I wholeheartedly recommend NFSU 2 to arcade racing fans the world over. Ultimately, it all comes down to how much fun you've had with the game and if it was addictive enough to make you lose sleep over it. Need for Speed Underground 2 checks out in both these categories; it's simply a fantastic sequel to an already good game. I wonder what got into EA, I kind of like thinking about cows while I'm playing their games. Now I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing anymore. Well, I can always load up FIFA 2005 if I want images of milked cows to pop into my head.

WindowsIGN
An arcade racer by nature, NFSU2 expands into many new territories with a deep, complex progression system. It builds out an impressive customization mode, lacking in last year's model, and furthers its reach into America's trendy import tuner culture with the appropriate dialog, music, and the addition, of all things, SUVs. The result is a startling 40-plus hour game that's well composed, packed with aggresive AI, and is perhaps a little too big for its own good.

The graphics are the most obvious improvement. We only can describe them as truly awesome, even on lower settings. Lights on the bridge sparkle in the night sky, and mannequins in store windows catch your eye as you blaze past. Little things, such as pumping your hydraulics and bouncing down the avenue, make the experience even more fun. Racing is arcade style (it's awfully hard to destroy your car) and easy to learn, yet power drifting is an acquired skill that keeps the learning curve gradual, but long. The only knocks on this top-notch driving game are the ubiquitous product placements (a Cingular messaging system?), high system requirements, and large download size. Considering the depth and quality of Need for Speed Underground 2, though, most gamers can forgive those details.

That and the ridiculous story and pathetic voice acting from a faux-street Brooke Burke notwithstanding. NFSU2 is the most fun racing game I’ve played in a while. It totally delivers the stuff that makes me a fan of arcade racers: a kick-ass environment and just enough deviation from reality to make me want to stick with it even when I don’t immediately win. In fact, NFSU2 ranks among tho most entertaining games I’ve played in a while—and I’d say that even it my last two reviews hadn’t been for Leisure Suit Larry and SpongeBob Square Pants.

Overall, this game is great. Everything from the first game has been improved and more importantly everything is more fun to play. The city may be a little too large for its own good, but using the "World Map" feature can solve even that problem. Improved AI makes almost every race exciting and there's enough modifications available to keep you busy for months. If you're into cars at all, this is a must buy.

PC gamers haven't had anywhere near the same selection to choose from, which makes the release of Need for Speed Underground 2 that much more timely and important. EA's latest in the fledgeling spin-off series is another solid entry, even if it's not quite as polished as its predecessor. This may disappoint some fans of last year's best-selling title, initially. But gamers who give Need for Speed Underground 2 a solid chance will once again be entranced. As before, the game performs where it counts; yes, racing in Need for Speed Underground 2 feels excellent.

Need for Speed Underground 2 does everything that the first one did except bigger and better! This is one of the best racing games that I have had the chance to play in a long time, and you will be able to tell how great this game is from the minute that you load it. It will offer you hours upon hours of racing challenges that will keep you coming back for more. This is one game that should not be missed.

One of the best features of this game is the ability to upgrade your vehicles and customize them before racing. There is a ton of ways to customize your ride with parts to have better performance. There's over 50 individual performance parts for your car which fall into many different categories, like Engines, ECUs, brakes, tires, suspension, transmission, Nintro, weight reduction etc. Unlike the original game, NFSU2's nitrous system is much more dynamic, allowing you to fill it up by performing all manner of racing feats. Of course, there is also a ton of available paint jobs, decals spoilers, bumpers and more for decorative and practical purposes, so you can truly create your own unique racing car.

With 125 miles of road to race and 13 different vehicles the game has a decent replay value. I think the cars are great. Again I don’t approve of the music but that’s why you can turn it off. I wasn’t able to set up an account to play online so I can’t talk about it. The story behind the game is pretty decent. I think they could have added some motion or video to the Rachel sessions since there are so many, all you see is a still picture while she talks. I don’t know why the SUV’s are in the game as they don’t race well, you can trick them out good though. I think Need for Speed Underground 2 is very good, but music, crash damage, and improved Rachel sessions would have made it better.

Need for Speed Underground 2 is by no means a perfect game. Players will most likely encounter annoyances while playing. That said, it is an excellent racer, with more to offer than its predecessor. The additional game modes, upgraded customization, and most-importantly the game's open world environment make it stand a clear step above its predecessor which was already a fantastic racer to begin with. While the previous game may be more polished, this edition aims higher and achieves more regardless of a few missteps.

The original Need for Speed Underground did a great job of conveying the glamorized street racing scene (as boosted in the movie The Fast and the Furious and the rest). It's a world that's as much about style as substance and the whole aesthetic screams on in Need for Speed Underground 2. The game rolls super-slick visuals, tricked-out cars, and a free-roaming California vibe into a solid street racing experience.

The street lamps light up the dark, winding streets like beacons beckoning you to follow it into the empty districts where nothing but the swaying trees are stirring. You feel the vibrating rumbling of your engine, gripping the steering wheel until your knuckles turn white and from out of nowhere a pretty girl steps out into the street with her arm outstretched. Next to you is a series of cars, sleek machines that shine with the reflections of the street lamps and moonlight. Then the girl drops her arm and your foot hits the accelerator and off you go to become a street legend or the promise of something that could have been a legend. Welcome to Bayview, illegal-racing capital of the world. Welcome to Need for Speed Underground 2.

Electronic Arts has returned with some high-speed street racing. The Need For Speed series has been around since the 3DO days. Taking one of last year’s best racing games, Need For Speed Underground has just received a new overhaul, with new features and such. And Need For Speed Underground 2 has just raced to retail stores everywhere. And EA has packed this new title with some great new features as well as a more polished look to the graphics. There are some new sexy additions. Brooke Burke, the former-host of E! Entertainment Television’s popular travel series, “Wild On.” Is also featured in Need For Speed Underground 2. She plays the streetwise organizer of an elite underground circuit as she guides players to become the top racers on the streets. It seems that sexy smoking-hot chicks is the new thing for racing titles. Hey, I wont complain! Bring them on baby!

Personally, I think we're dealing with one of the best arcade racing games ever. The quantity and quality of the options available to you, the level design and the freedom of movement, the cars and their handling through traffic, the details, all these make NFS: U2 a winner and you really have to play it to believe me. I know the story sucks - Brooke sucks even more - and that URL races are boring as they are now, but perhaps they will fix all these in the next title. I'm sorry! Please forgive me, my readers. You can't fix Brooke, just replace her. Until then, I wish you good luck with your cars and, who knows, maybe you'll win the WCG tournament. Yes, it seems NFS: U2 is included on their list. Watch it out there, ok? I might just take your lead. See ya!

Overall, I’d have to say that if you don’t like racing, then you’ve no reason to play this game. But if you’re the sort of person that gets turned on by a 20LB NOS bottle, then you better get help -- getting turned on by a bottle of liquid, no matter how fast it makes your car go, ISN’T HEALTHY! Seriously, this game is pretty damn addictive, if repetitive at times. There are only so many times you can compete in the same style of racing before you get sick of it. But there’s always the motivation that winning one more race will get you that nice new set of chromes, or fat-ass 12" subs. And that’s the annoying thing -- it’s so bloody MOREISH, DAMMIT!

Was hatte ich mich auf Need for Speed Underground 2 gefreut.

Creating the free-roaming city for Underground 2 was worth the effort, though, even if it's not a completely successful experiment. Once you've unlocked the entire area and learned how to get around on the surface streets and freeways, it creates a remarkable sense of immersion in the environment. It doesn't just feel like a collection of scattered race tracks, it feels like a real world, with the player a unique little speck in the middle of it. It means something now, being the "king of the street," when all of those streets are laid out in front of you.

Need for Speed Underground 2 builds on its predecessor in more ways than it might have had to. After all, the first one arguably featured no more racing options than Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 (it had more race formats, but fewer choices when progressing through them), and it currently sits on the throne as EA's best-selling game of all time. A quickie sequel without much evolution in options and presentation could have been expected to still do pretty well.

The underground has gotten a lot larger and better in many ways, which definitely makes it a player in the competitive market of tuner-style racers. NFSU2 basically comes down to a matter of taste - if you like an arcade/sim mix, and dig the nouveaux style of free-roaming and emergent gameplay, then this game is all you. If you tend to like very arcadey racers (like the first NFSU), or more sim-type racers, then NFSU2 is probably not going to be your thing. Gamers that just plain getting their money’s worth should snatch up NFSU2 just for the sheer number of mod combos and the huge number of gameplay hours needed to fully complete this title.

What's with all of this head-banging bull[expletive]? I turned the music all the way down. Why can't EA allow you to change stations on the fly like the Grand Theft Auto games? Also, an auto-save feature is badly needed. You can only save after a win, and there are too many annoying prompts. Finally, it took me a while to realize that the steering controls in the drag races are completely different from the rest of the game - be aware of that. Despite these relatively minor flaws, Underground 2 provides the best night driving action I've ever experienced in a video game, and it's a game I enjoy playing almost every weekend. Check it out.

In a gaming season plagued by same-old-same-old sequels, Need for Speed Underground 2 is a rare title that changes up the formula and still manages to stay fun. When you combine its lasting pick up appeal with a surprisingly well thought out campaign mode, you have a racing game that provides depth without sacrificing the over the top action of an arcade game. All in all, you could do far worse this holiday than picking up a copy for a little yuletide diversion.

Overall is Need for Speed Underground 2 up to scratch? The answer is yes – the game isn't breaking any barriers, Underground 2 is more of a development on 1 than a totally new driving experience, which is the case with all Need for Speed titles. The Need for Speed engine has always been known for being a tad skatey and still is, there are more realistic titles out there but if its cool creative and captivating street racing you are looking for and you have a passion for crazy car customisation then you could do much worse than get yourself Need for Speed Underground 2.

Overall, Underground 2 does manage to expand on the street racing culture it worked so hard to embody in the first title. Broadening the racing arenas to include a complete city, the number of race types and vehicles significantly increases the number of things to do in the game. However, the quirks of the world map, lack of visual speed and other gameplay issues keep it from surpassing the original title. That being said, Need For Speed Underground 2 will still appeal to racing fans looking for an exciting time behind the wheel.

All in all, I enjoyed Need for Speed Unerground 2. Excellent customization options, solid racing controls, and the first two hours of exploration mode were the high points. It had some problems too in product placement, lack of car damage, and contrived dialog. Overall, the good far outweighed the bad. For me, it hasn’t dethroned Gran Turismo 3 A Spec, but it’s the best street racing game I’ve played. If you are a fan of NFSU, or street racing games in general I implore you to pick this title up.

Last year’s Underground was, for various reasons, my favorite racing game of 2003 Sure, it had some fairly standard racing (the one exception being the outstanding drag racing), but I couldn’t help but love all the customization options. In fact, I had such an addiction to modifying my car that I played through the game multiple times with a smile on my face, with little regard for the somewhat repetitive racing. So, as you may have guessed, I came into this year’s edition expecting a lot, and sadly I found myself to be fairly disappointed. The feature that was intended to be this game’s biggest innovation – a huge free-roaming city that lets the player explore over 125 load-free, streaming miles of road and pick and choose races – ended up detracting from the experience, not expanding it.

On the whole we admire what NFSU2 has brought to the table in terms of customisations and we’re even swayed by the glitzy graphics and excellent audio. It’s just a shame that the racing isn’t quite as exciting. With the exception of a few modes, NFSU2 plays it very safe – a little too safely for our tastes – and we have to say we preferred the traffic swerving, pedestrian dodging, cop evading style of racing offered by Midnight Club 2. With the third Midnight Club game arriving in March, it’ll be interesting to see how things pan out.

Driving games have changed over the years and it's not just about your skill behind the wheel anymore, it's about the whole package. You need to look the part as well as drive it. Need for Speed Underground 2 boasts more cosmetic upgrades, more challenges and more driving. this is a good thing. There is a wide selection of cars and newly added SUV's to choose from along with a hefty amount of tracks and race types. Overall, the game turned out to be a fantastic and deep experience on the Nintendo DS. The only major downsides of the game are the difficulty, the average sound, and the fact that there's some graphical pop in while racing. Everything else comes together to turn this title into a solid racing experience. After playing for a while, you'll really come to enjoy and appreciate the details and speed of Need for Speed Underground 2.

EA's second release in the subgenre in just over two months is another solid entry, even if it's not quite as polished as its predecessor. This may disappoint some fans of last year's best-selling title, initially. But gamers who give Need for Speed Underground 2 a solid chance will once again be entranced. As before, the game performs where it counts; yes, racing in Need for Speed Underground 2 feels excellent.

Need for Speed Underground 2 is a great game on the PC and various consoles. While the transition to the Nintendo DS could have been better, this game will still keep you occupied for some time.

I had a bit of deja vu with this game. The tracks were very similar, perhaps outright copies, of many of the ones I had raced a few months ago on the PSP. The framerate is amazing for a handheld racer and if you don’t mind the low detail and dark color pallet you will find a lot of challenging racing in Need for Speed Underground 2.

Cheap money-making schemes notwithstanding, Need for Speed Underground 2 does a pretty good job capturing the tuner scene with fast races and flashy cars. However, some lingering A.I. issues and the excessive time it takes just to get where you need to go keeps this ride from shifting to fifth.

The underground racing scene works in mysterious ways. One minute, you’re cruising around town as carefree as can be, and the next you’re screeching at a stop sign, slamming on the gas and careening around at twice the legal speed limit. It’s fast, it’s sudden and it serves up the adrenaline that many racers out there live for.

Need for Speed Underground 2 starts with last year's game as a template and builds from there. Unfortunately, almost everything that has been added to this year's game detracts from the overall experience. Once you're in and racing and customizing your cars, it's a lot of fun, but there are too many obstacles standing between you and the best parts of the game.

Last year, EA took its long-running Need for Speed series in an exciting new direction with the release of Need for Speed Underground, a racing game that focused on making the import tuner scene the star of its arcade-style racing show. The game worked really well, combining the right level of car customization with good track design, challenging opponents, and impressive graphical effects. Now, one year later, a sequel is on the streets, adding some new race types and a big, open city to cruise around. The actual racing in Need for Speed Underground 2 is still pretty good, but unfortunately most of the stuff you do in between races keeps you away from the game's best moments.

So do I suggest picking Need for Speed Underground 2 for the Nintendo DS? If you’re a DS owner looking for a decent racer, and can’t find that in Asphalt or Ridge Racer, EA might have answered your wishes. For fans of the franchise, especially the Game Boy Advance games, Pocketeers delivers a solid effort. With hopefully more modes and the possibility for online play, Need for Speed: Most Wanted should be the DS racing game to get. Until then, Underground 2 is enough to keep you content.

Need for Speed: Underground 2 isn't the sequel I dreamed of. The big game world doesn't make the game any better. Look at it like this: would you rather be looking at loading screens all the time instead of making your way through some menu's? The new race modes are also a bit disappointing and because of the fact that everything takes place at night, it will bore you pretty soon. The lasting appeal however is a lot longer than the previous installment and the tuning part of the game is even more fun. So if you're looking for the best tuning game out there, NFS:U2 is really your bag. If you, however, are looking for the best arcade racing game, you might want to check out Burnout 3 because it's because it's just better no matter how you look at it.

Overall, Need for Speed Underground 2 gets the job done. There's enough variety here to keep you busy; it delivers a strong sense of speed; and the control, while not perfect, is good enough to keep you coming back. If you're a DS owner in need of a good driving game, NFS Underground 2 most definitely fits the bill.

Finally there's a driving game on the Nintendo DS that most people will enjoy. NFS Underground 2 is a solid driving game that most will appreciate but it's not without its problems. The handling takes some getting used to and whilst a lot will persevere and get used to it, some will take an instant dislike to its twitchiness. It would have also been great if the game could have allowed you to have multiplayer races with just one game card. Nintendo made a lot of the console's ability to play multiplayer games with just one game card. Sadly though few developers are taking up this option and are insisting that every one of the 4 players must have their own game which means precious few gamers will experience the multiplayer game.

This sequel to EA's best-selling racing franchise emphasizes flashy visuals, corporate sponsorships and ease-of-use over the seedy aspects of illegal street racing. Bayview provides a neon-tinged urban environment to cruise around in; wild races and sick upgrades are found around every corner. The game has its flaws, but gear-heads will love the customization choices and the racing is still fun, if not very challenging. We'd strongly suggest players rent Need for Speed Underground 2 to take a test drive within the virtual city's limits.

The biggest upgrade in NFS: Underground 2 is the free-roaming style of play. Rather than just bouncing you between different sections of the city like its predecessor, the game allows you to roam a sizable city in search of the perfect ride and the means to get it. You’ll participate in various organized events as well as a few impromptu exercises while hunting down hidden tuner shops throughout the city.

There are two reasons to buy this game and two reasons alone. One is if you are a manic Need for Speed fan and must own everything Need for Speed. The other is if you must own a racing game for your Nintendo DS and cannot live if you do not. For those that don't fall into these categories, Need for Speed Underground 2 DS is indefinitely a miss, maybe just a hire if you're interested in seeing what racing games are like on the DS. A nice attempt, but an overall feeling of unfulfilling incompleteness.

But yet for all the camp pastel slipperiness, we still kept playing. If we weren't tasked with reviewing such a commercially gigantic game, we'd probably never tell a soul that it was possible to enjoy a Need For Speed Underground game, never mind its bastard offspring. And that's the maddening, messed up thing about all this. Despite all evidence to the contrary, we really did somehow glean an unlikely amount of enjoyment out of this hysterically warped piece of racing game design. Maybe the trick is that EA knows it doesn't make any sense either. It just knows there's a demand for this stuff. Like terrifyingly addictive bad things like cigarettes, fast food and trash TV, you can't help but get sucked in by it all. Weird creatures, human beings. Always enjoying the wrong things, despite themselves.

WindowsG4 TV: X-Play
In direct comparison to a game like Burnout 3, NFSU2 is almost a driving simulation. The handling is far more realistic, the physics more appropriate to the real world and the overall feel of the game is more serious and less arcade like. That isn’t to suggest that this is a hardcore racing simulation -- it’s still more arcade than reality -- but despite all the over-the-top use of shiny graphic effects and almost offensively in-your-face product tie-ins, the game still plays excellently. The inclusion of an open city to cruise through is really the big plug though, and almost makes all the rest of the fluff tolerable.

Need for Speed: Underground 2 is by no means a bad game, but the sad truth is that it's about the best the DS will have in the way of semi-realistic racers. The hardware just isn't conducive to them. At least Mario Kart DS is coming up later this year, which is more the DS's speed.

Although Need for Speed Underground 2 on the DS has more than its fair share of flaws, it still manages to pull together a decent racing experience. If you're itching for a race and own a DS, this will keep you satisfied. Although the game isn't on the same level as its console counterparts, the DS version holds its own.

Nintendo DSDigital Press - Classic Video Games
There's nothing particularly wrong with Need for Speed Underground 2, and it's an adequate title if you like racing and know your way around cars. It makes some rather odd design choices (the same ones made on the home consoles) and the controls along with the AI issues can be frustrating. It will likely be enjoyable until you try the first touch screen based mini-game. After that, you'll realize you're not having much fun.

GameCube1UP
Need for Speed Underground 2 builds on its predecessor in more ways than it might have had to.
