Description

Scooby-Doo! First Frights is an action platform game that puts the player in the shoes of Mystery Inc. during some of their first mysteries. The gang explores spooky locales such as Rocky Bay, Keystone Castle, and others. The player has to collect clues, solve puzzles, and fend off creepy creatures. After collecting clues the player gets to choose who he or she thinks the villain behind each episode is. Correctly guessing grants an additional bonus item.

Co-op play allows players to drop-in or drop-out as they please. The game also features dozens of unlockables including trophies and character costumes with unique powers. Unlockables include over twenty costumes and villains to play as.

The game features four unique episodes to play through, each with a chase sequence and final boss battle. The comprise of over 20 different levels spanning a larger variety of environments, such as a spooky forest, crazy fun house, creepy castle, haunted high school, and others.

The game features two different game modes. "Story Mode" gives the player a specific characters to play through the core story of the game. Players can return to any level they've previously beaten in "Explore Mode" to collect additional hidden items with any unlocked character.

A decent game that has been very biased.

The Good
Of all of the bias I've seen put on video games, this is one of the worst cases. 90% of all critics who reviewed this game hated it because "it isn't what a Scooby-Doo game should be based around whaaaaaaa!". Yeah. Well, here is a completely unbiased review, since I never really liked Scooby-Doo anyway.

The story is that of a Scooby Doo cartoon: a ghost has appeared in town and you meddling kids and your dog must stop it from causing mayhem. Very basic. Very bland. But there are 4 "episodes". So... 4 times the basic-ness and blandness.

The gameplay is actually fun. It is a beat-em-up game, not an adventure. You can cry yourself to sleep now. Anyway, you play as two of the Mystery Inc. members and beat the crap out of enemies and collect Scooby-Snacks. You can use the Scooby-Snacks to buy costumes that I have yet to use (I haven't finished the game). You can also get trophies and monster masks (which are freakin' easy to guess who it belongs to).

The music wasn't really memorable. However, I did like the first bosses' first theme.

The graphics are bright and colorful. I don't like the models of the main characters, but everything else looks fine. The frame-rate is decent. It's actually better than most PS2 games I think.

The voice acting is the same as the original cartoon. Whether this is good or bad all depends on who you are. If you loved the show, this is good. If you were like me and never really watched the show, then the voices could get a little annoying.

The Bad
I am terrible with the long range attackers, so I don't like them. They shoot kind of awkwardly to me. Also, when I just want fool around with enemies, doing things such as making them fall in the abyss, the partners can get in the way of you and fun. These are the only real complaints I have.

The Bottom Line
Overall, this game is better than some critics make it out to be. If you like Scooby-Doo, beat-em-ups, or both, go right ahead and buy it.
