Description

2004 Mahjongg is a single player game compilation featuring five separate games, these are:* 2004 Mahjongg: A traditional tile matching game with forty different layouts. The compilation contains a level editor which allows the player to create new formations for use here and with other games in this package.

  • Lines: This game is similar to Magic Lines. It is played on a grid that is either 9x9, 10x10, 12x12 or 15x15 in size and starts with just a few balls being placed randomly in the playing area. Balls can be moved to another place on the grid provided they can slide freely on the board to their new position. The object is to remove as many balls as possible by forming horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines of 5 balls or more but with each turn the game will add three new balls to the board.

There are no hints or undo in Lines game, the only help is a small window that shows the next three balls to be added.

  • Blocks: This game is a falling block puzzle similar to Columns and it's the only game here that can be played using the keyboard. It's a falling block puzzle where the shapes are all three block columns and the object is to match three or more blocks of the same colour in columns, rows or diagonals. The more tiles are in a line the more points you earn. When a line is completed its tiles disappear and the other tiles can fall. If they form another column when falling (it's usually called a "chain reaction"), even more points are scored.
There are three basic game areas to this game

  • Memory: This game uses Mahjongg tiles in five specific formations. Initially all the tiles are face down. When the player clicks on a pair of tiles they briefly turn face up, if they match they disappear and the game continues until all the tiles have been removed.

  • Concentration: This game is a mix of Mahjongg and Memory modes. It's a standard game of mahjongg played with mahjongg rules for removing tiles and the full range of forty mahjongg tile layouts, but the tiles are all placed face down and only turn over when selected. The game continues until all the tiles have been removed.

One for collectors only

The Good
This is called 2004 Mahjongg so it should stand or fall based on whether the Mahjongg element works. Well I have played several of the games and I can say that the gameplay works well. It's not outstanding and forty layouts isn't a lot these days, but it works.

The games Memory and Concentration are sort of Mahjongg variants limited to a few specific tile layouts. Once again they work well and are certainly taxing but they feel like a novelty afterthought.

The Bad
I was not a great fan of the artwork here. I found the colours of the board and the background to be very dark and gloomy and the tilesets were neither sharp nor interesting. Being able to look below the topmost set of tiles is clever but it does leave the game area looking muddy and confused

Having a set of easily accessible game icons across the top of the screen works, and works well but all they do is duplicate the options that are in the menu bar. I could work with either, I didn't need both.

The Bottom Line
If you're a collector or connoisseur of Mahjongg games then you'd probably want this and you'd enjoy it because there is good solid gameplay here.
However for a casual gamer like me I'm sorry to say that everything here has been done before and has probably been done better.
