Hussar Games, also known as Huszár Games, is a Hungarian game development company founded in 2004 by Bulcsu Varhegyi and two other people. The team began as a garage project contracted by a military historian for research purposes, but eventually grew to a group of seven developers focuses on historical, real-time strategy games. The research efforts resulted into the studio's first title, 1848 (2006), a turn-based strategy game based on the Hungarian Independence War of 1848-1949. The game was sponsored by the Hungarian Ministry of Education and made available as a free download.

The game was also meant as a teaser for their next title, the commercial game For Liberty!, which was released two months later on 4th July to coincide with the American Declaration of Independence which is the main theme of the title. It was signed with Matrix Games and uses the same engine as 1848.

One year later, in 2007, a third game was released: Napoleon in Italy. Again a turn-based strategy game, it centers around the historical campaign of the French emperor.
