Toby Gard designed the character Lara Croft for Core Design's Tomb Raider, but left the company before the game was released to found his own development studio, Confounding Factor. The studio released Galleon for the Xbox in 2004 following a lengthy development period.

He returned to the Tomb Raider series in 2006 as a consultant for Crystal Dynamics' Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend. Gard worked on subsequent titles in the series Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Tomb Raider: Underworld. He has also been employed by Focal Point Games LLC and Spark Unlimited. In 2014 Gard founded his own studio, Tangentlemen.
