Did anyone successfully run this game in Windows Vista?

I am running Vista 64-bit on an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700, an ATI Radeon HD4870 card and DirectX 10.1. Whenever I try to start the game, it quits with a message box telling me that it did not find a 3D accelerator in my system. This is especially weird as the game setup already told me that it checks for a 3D accelerator, and there it reportedly found one.

I tried all compatibility modes without success, and Virtual PC is not an option because of the required 3D accelerator. I tried VMware Workstation 6.5 with Windows XP, which ran the game but the rider and bike textures were not shown (just plain white). The game actually ran on Ubuntu Linux 8.10 with Wine. Unfortunately, I only use Linux on my notebook, which is too weak for the game. I tried Wine for Windows, but it tells me that entry point DCIDestroy in dciman32.dll could not be found...

I don't think it makes a difference, but I'm using the OEM version of the game that came with the SideWinder Freestyle gamepad.

Any hints on what to try next?
