In short, Under Siege is a fast-paced, good-looking, accessible RTS that falls down only due to its sudden difficulty spikes and unremarkable story. The lack of tactical depth is balanced by brutal combat, the lack of variety offset by colourful graphics and relatively small missions. Perhaps best enjoyed as a multiplayer experience, Under Siege is still a lot of fun on your tod – and if nothing else, it certainly helps to occupy the RTS-shaped hole in the PS3’s catalogue.

Under Siege is a well-done RTS, although a bit too challenging for its own good. Featuring a high caliber production value and control scheme for a downloadable title, there’s a lot to like in this maiden voyage for a new studio. Still, it’s hard to appreciate all Under Siege has to offer with so much dying going on.

When the dust settles from battle, Under Siege is an RTS game that deviates from the formula most of us have grown accustomed to, and plays more like a dungeon crawler. Lacking in buildings or resources, players will be left to manage troops real-time in an unforgiving world where enemies come from all angles, and players must stay on their toes at all times. PlayStation Move adds to the experience and the online/offline modes are fun – that is if you can find a game online. Editing current maps or creating new ones gives players the tools to get creative, but the ghost town that is the online mode doesn’t give too much incentive to do so. If you are in the market for an RTS experience that will test your mettle and only lightly dent your online wallet, then Under Siege is a game you want to look into. Those wanting something that stays closer to the traditional formula of games like Starcraft won’t find much comfort here.

Under Siege may be a downloadable game, but it’s certainly not throwaway. It’s engaging and, if the controls can be mastered and the bugs forgiven, a satisfying sampler of RTS thrills for the uninitiated, and a stamina test for anyone who thinks they’re hard enough.

With a slightly less uncompromising approach, Under Siege could have been a great gateway drug for those otherwise resistant to the allure of RTS - especially with multiplayer and level editing waiting in the wings for those who really get into it. As it stands, though, Under Siege is a game that requires a degree of patience and tolerance before it truly clicks. If you have the required resolve, there's plenty to admire.

Finally, adding some longevity to the game, Under Siege includes a fairly powerful level editor that's at least on par with most PC games. While the game's light on actual strategy and heavy on micromanagement and instant to instant tactics, it's still not a bad choice for people looking for quick, RTS-style skirmishes on the PS3.

Under Siege is a good game that provides a few quick battles and some very tough challenges. It has some off-putting quirks, but Under Siege can still be a captivating game.

Under Siege totes an online mode, and it felt a little more even-keeled to me than the campaign. In fact, I won my best-of-three encounter with a random player online 2-0, which surprised me considering how badly I was getting beat in the campaign even when I dropped the difficulty level. Under Siege also has a split-screen competitive mode if you want to play with a friend (or foe) locally. There's PlayStation Move support, which seems to make sense, but doesn't work well at all. You'll find that the DualShock controller works just fine here. Then again, you'll also find that controls are the least of this game's issues.

Gameplay (Benelux) N/A
