Fans of Dragon Ball Z should not be without this game although I don't recommend purchasing the Cube version if you've already played the PS2 version since the gameplay is the same.

DBZ: Budokai 2 is a game that sells almost entirely on its name brand and atmosphere; the main thing that it has going for it is that it recreates its franchise so faithfully that you feel as if you're completely in control of its world. People not really into DBZ may want to rent this one first, or stay away completely--however, if you're a fan, or even one of those people who casually enjoyed catching its syndicated dubbed run on television but kept losing track of it due to rapidly switching timeslots, this title will likely give you more hours of fun than you're expecting.

Dragon Ball Z is a phenomenon. The franchise has swept both Japan and America during the course of the last several years and publisher Atari has capitalized on that truth. In 2003, it released the second installment of the popular fighting series Dragon Ball Z Budokai for PlayStation 2 and in late 2004 GameCube owners received an improved port of the title.

The first Budokai was total fan service, and, really, Budokai 2 isn't that radically different. However, it feels rushed and doesn't quite exude the same level of care that the first installment does. The omission of a story mode is Budokai 2's biggest misstep, and the dragon world mode simply isn't a suitable replacement. The improved visuals are nice, and some of the additions made to the fighting system are fun, but Budokai 2 is still underwhelming.

Unfortunately, this GameCube release of Budokai 2 comes hot on the heels of the release of Budokai 3 for PS2. If you've played the newest game in the series, this one will feel like a definite throwback, especially in terms of the fighting engine, which is much more involved in 3 and makes the battles feel even more like the anime. This GameCube port has a few new features that the PS2 version didn't, like a few new stages and skill capsules, but you can't escape the fact that the game is already a year old. Hopefully the GameCube will get a version of Budokai 3 sooner rather than later. Sure, this game will please fans of the series (who don't own PS2s), but its sequel is a much better fighting game.

It's a little difficult to give a fair review to the GameCube port of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 when the original game is not only a year old, but already has a sequel that's superior to this game in countless ways. With this in mind, it may be better to start with what's different on the GameCube: besides the improved loading times, there are some new secret stages, skills, world tournament settings, and difficulty levels--and, uh, that's it. If you already own Budokai 2 on the PlayStation 2, there's no need to buy this.
