1982

Description official description

1982 is a freeware, single player, vertical shooter in the style of the old arcade games of yesteryear.

This game can be played in windowed or full screen modes and has three levels of difficulty and three modes of play;

  • Arcade: fifty levels to play through
  • Survivor: where one hit means it's game over
  • Time Attack: just three minutes to rack up a high score

There is a web based leaderboard and the game also records the player's highest local score.

The power-ups in this game are a little bit different from the norm. Initially they are space ships that shoot at the player but when shot they turn into coloured '+' signs. If they are shot again before they hit the ground they begin shooting the incoming waves of enemies with each colour having a different attack pattern. If they hit the ground then they can boost either the players weapons, health, shield etc.

This takes me back, sooooo far back

The Good
This is a simple game, just hold down the mouse button, dodge incoming ships and hose the screen with your mighty laser - except that this doesn't work and you have to be a bit smarter than that.

There's wit and humour here as 1982 references several old games that I recognise and probably many that I don't. Some enemies descend in ways that are similar to Space Invaders while others swoop and dive like in Galaxian. There are big green rocks that bounce around the screen in the manner of Asteroids, spaceships land and kidnap little blocky men as in Defender and among the waves of aliens are some that look like PacMan ghosts and giant space invaders.

The music is just about right, catchy without being memorable, while the sound effects are spot on and just as I remember.

One of the features I really like is the leaderboard. Like other games I have, 1982 has a leaderboard, but the high score is way beyond anything I can reach - currently the high score for arcade mode/easy level is 1215752229! The problem I've had with other games is that my pitiful efforts, my best is 10179, just aren't enough to be recorded, but this game keeps a record of local scores so I know what I have to beat next time. That's a nice touch.

The Bad
I can't think of a single negative to say about this game.

The Bottom Line
This is a good, well constructed, fun game and it's free. Try it.
