Back of Case - PlayStation 2

In this wacky platformer from Midway you play as Dr. Muto, a typically unpredictable mad scientist who scoffs at the laws of nature. His hilarious quest takes him across five planets as he gains the ability to mutate into various life-forms.

The Doctor Is In

Dr. Muto has made a name for himself with astounding scientific feats, but even the best minds can make a mistake. His latest blunder has destroyed his home planet, but this maniacal genius is determined to restore it. To help in his venture the daffy doctor has invented two sidekicks, a clunky assistant named Janky and a smart-mouthed computer named AL.

Disaster seems to follow Dr. Muto like a faithful puppy and his Danny DeVito-esque short temper doesn't help matters. Fortunately, his Splizz device lets him irradiate enemies and nab their DNA. With these building blocks of life, Dr. Muto mutates (get it?) into creatures ranging from a tiny mouse to a giant gorilla. Even when transformed, though, the doctor retains his characteristic green goggles and white lab coat.

Dr. Muto's six strange forms provide a solid basis for some interesting platforming. Each form has special abilities. For example, as a mouse, the doctor can crawl into tiny spaces and discover areas beyond the reach of a normal man. His gorilla form is perfect for strong-arming menacing enemies. And as a spider, Dr. Muto can spin a web and climb his way out of sticky situations.

His mutating abilities make Dr. Muto unique in the world of platformers, but there is still plenty of old-school collecting, jumping and enemy-bashing. Fortunately, collecting the hundreds of items feels important because each has a logical use beyond getting 100 percent on the final screen. Isotopes power your computer, machine parts are a must for building helpful gadgets, and of course enemy DNA helps you fashion new mutations.

Controls are generally spot-on, but expect the occasional spell of sluggishness.

Graphics

Midway has given Dr. Muto a highly stylized look that complements the zany storyline. From his pointy moustache to his elf-like shoes, Dr. Muto himself seems to sprout more sharp points than a broken window. Environments and enemies are quite detailed. Everything -- from electrical beams to toxic gases -- casts colorful lighting effects. Strewn with gadgets and beakers, Dr. Muto's lab accurately reflects his scatterbrain persona. A junkyard is appropriately caked with grime.

Midway's first platformer on the Nintendo GameCube teems with personality. The mutation shtick is particularly fun. If you can overlook the occasionally rough controls, expect madcap fun from the mad doctor.
