Moby ID: 14681

DOS version

Racing game with no realism and extremely dull gameplay

The Good
Well the copy protection system used a funny wheel... Guess that's about it...

The Bad
This game is a great example of how a bad game can be sold solely on license. The game is extremely easy. It is possible to drive around at all courses with the speeder down all the way with the fastest setup. So the game holds absolutely no challenges. The cars are only shown as sprites. And this game was put out after the first Grand Prix game which did have 3D graphics.

The Bottom Line
Nigel Mansell is an arcade style formula one racing game. You compete for the world championship on sixteen different stages. To get you started you can take a driving school where you get advice from Nigel Mansell telling you if you are going too slow. This is basically all he is telling you as there is no way to go too fast in this game. So when driving the only real skill you need is hitting the turn keys at the right moments. The graphics reminds a lot of the old Outrun game. This means that the cars are portrayed by 2D-sprites. Since this game is made by Gremlin who also produced the Lotus series this should come as no surprise. But in a formula one game it is really uninspiring. And the ridiculously simple gameplay doesn't help at all. This game has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
