It's amazing how Assassin's Creed manages to reinvent itself so often. The change of setting really feels like a breath of fresh air, especially after the eye-searingly bright blues and yellows of the last couple of games, and by keeping all of the best bits and removing a lot of the fluff that had built up over recent years, Valhalla ends up being one of the most enjoyable AC games ever made. It's as close to a perfect entry in the series as it's possible to get (just, you know, a few silly bugs and glitches here and there, but nothing remotely serious to complain about performance-wise, even on a creaky old OG Xbox One), so it'd sort of be unfair to give it anything other than five stars. If Valhalla is any indication of what's in store for the new generation of consoles, the next few years should be incredibly fun indeed!

We love that it’s starting to look back at older, more classic elements of the franchise and finding ways to reimplement them in an ever-evolving, fresh feeling new game.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the best open world RPG this year. It’s colorful locals are a joy to discover, combat and stealth feel deep and rewarding, and there’s a viking hoard of things to do.

I’m a massive fan of the Assassin’s Creed series and have blown hundreds of hours of my life on the franchise as a whole. Now though, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on Xbox is possibly my favourite entry in the series – stunningly glorious, fluid as you like, and full of mammoth amounts of content. If I had to be negative, then at times it can feel a little bit buggy, but I don’t think I’ve played an open-world game that hasn’t had this problem and at no point has it affected my enjoyment of the game. If you want something that shows the new Xbox Series X off and bestows the possibilities of what games will be like as we move forward, then you can’t go wrong by embracing your inner Viking and heading into the world of Valhalla.

It is guilty of being a little bit longer than it needs to be, but at least you’re getting plenty of bang for your buck – especially if you’re looking for an excitingly stunning title to sink your teeth into to really see what the new consoles are capable of. Whatever way you look at it, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla marks a mighty impressive debut for the series on the next-gen hardware and I’m excited to see what direction Ubisoft take it in next.

Assassin's Creed's transformation into a full-blown RPG hasn't been the cleanest one, especially as features like stealth feel left to stagnate while other aspects get so much better. But Valhalla succeeds on so many levels that it's easy to forgive the times when it doesn't. It's an enormous game, and it'll probably take me another 20 hours to finish everything I still haven't completed. I honestly can't wait.

I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface with Valhalla, but I don’t at all feel overly encumbered. Whereas other open-world games can feel unsurmountable in scale, this entry into the Assassin’s Creed series manages to feel huge and contained at the same time. The glorious return of social stealth and the savage combat will see me coming back to this Viking epic many times over I have no doubt. If the next-gen versions of this game can iron out the technical problems that sprout up here there that would be great, but even with the open-world oddities and occasionally frustrating enemy I still think this might be my favourite Assassin’s Creed game to date.

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla takes all the previous systems introduced in Origins and Odyssey, and streamlines them into a more focused experience. The game may have some flaws, and it's a shame to see the combat remains mediocre after all these years, yet Valhalla is easily the best entry in the recent trilogy. Grab your axes and shields: it's time to go a-viking!

Assassin's Creed Valhalla really comes together on PS5. Near instant load times combined with silky smooth performance make it a joyous open world excursion, complete with an engrossing main story. What's more, the countless bugs that plagued the PS4 version of the game have, for the most part, been squashed. This is Ubisoft's best ever attempt at an open world RPG in the vein of something like The Witcher 3, and while it is still a little rough around the edges, Valhalla leaves its mark as a top tier entry in the Assassin's Creed series.

Is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla the best entry in the series yet? Some would be tempted to say so. While the map size might overwhelm some players, it remains an easy game to mainline with the right navigation mode turned on. In fact, the quick load times help to make this an even easier task than in previous generations. This is an iteration of Assassin’s Creed that has a bit of everything from the previous games, as refined as we have seen to date.

Slikt blir bare flisespikkeri i lengden.

Everybody has their Assassin's Creed. Mine might still be the pirate's life in Black Flag. But Valhalla is basically Vikings vs. knights, filling out the other two sides of my personal trifecta. The assassinations might've gone soft, but the northern European world building hits hard.

Valhalla hits almost every note correct and finds a way to hone in on the best elements of its gameplay while downplaying the parts we've grown tired of. The Ancient Order bounties are a replacement for the cult system from Odyssey and are streamlined to feel even easier to pursue. The daily quests return as well, with relatively low prices for some excellent gear. Investigating mysteries is quicker and more rewarding, finding new places feels natural and exciting, and the feeling of going 'a viking is thrilling. I only became more excited to continue playing with each hour that passed - something I can't say about the previous two entries in the series. I recommend all fans of open world RPGs and especially fans of Origins and Odyssey pick up Assassin's Creed Valhalla this fall, especially if you're breaking in a next-generation console.

If you’re in the mood for another open-world action game, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a fine choice. It is a little too similar in aspects to the last two games, making this feel like the point where Ubisoft may want to consider re-evaluating the series once again, but the settings, characters, and overall world are enough to overlook most of the repetitiveness. So provided you don’t have open-world burnout from the other like-minded games that released this year, I think Valhalla is certainly worth checking out.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is well executed on several levels, sans the bugs that I ran into. It is a true AAA title that is a worthy playthrough for fans of the game old and new. It is a tale of fate, loyalty, glory, and morality. Eivor must make tough decisions as to how to grow their settlement and how they navigate relationships in the world. The decisions you make will change components of the story, so you are in charge of your own destiny. One quote from Eivor stood out to me, and a paraphrase here as to not potentially spoil anything… ‘“The toughest battle you’ll ever fight in your life is the battle within yourself.” Skal!!

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is everything I hoped it would be, and more. It sells the Viking fantasy flawlessly, is brimming gorgeous locations, vistas and interesting characters, and will keep you busy for 100 or so hours if you want to grab everything on offer. It's buggy in places, and the grinding is overwhelming at times to the point where it spoils the feeling of exploration and progression. However, these shortcomings can be overlooked if you're willing to stick with it. And you should, because Eivor's journey is one worth soaking up.

Overall, Ubisoft has created a very entertaining Vikings game, one that will only get better with patches for the visual weirdness. As long as you don’t expect Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to be like past AC games where the Order is tantamount to everything the main character does, AC fans will find plenty to enjoy. If this is your first time to the world of Assassin’s Creed, then perhaps this is the best way to start (just ignore all the present-day mumbo jumbo).

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla brings quality of life improvements to the new Assassin’s Creed model but doesn’t stray too far from familiar territory. If you enjoyed the last two games and want more of that, Valhalla is exactly what the doctor ordered, but there may be some who after spending 200+ hours completing Origins and Odyssey are burnt out on the format. This version does put less emphasis on the modern day lore and is more action combat oriented than stealth which may be off putting to people who prefer the classic Assassin’s Creed titles. But those caveats aside, this is the title that was the personal favorite when compared against Origins and Odyssey. Taken on its own and judged on its own merits, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is an enjoyable opportunity to vicariously raid and pillage the English countryside.

It is undeniable that the series is growing, and it’s admirable that the developers are willing to try new things. Overall, the experience works in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It’s not a perfect fit, yet, but there’s promise in the series future if they continue to head in a direction that has more RPG elements, and options for a direct approach. It also feels like a proof of concept that they can continue to attempt virtually any setting with a decent chance of success.

Even with its technical shortcomings on last-generation hardware, it is hard to not call Assassin’s Creed Valhalla an amazing open-world RPG. It’s obvious that Ubisoft did its homework and learned from Origins and Odyssey. Valhalla’s story is one of the best not only in the franchise but in the open-world RPG genre. The world is vast but not laden with empty, pointless space. Combat is addicting, character customization is the best the franchise has ever seen, and the welcome return of composer Jesper Kyd makes for one of last year’s most immersive and satisfying experiences.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is another great addition to the franchise. With some minor flaws, like boring side quests, and somewhat unsatisfying combat, the game totally lives up to its expectations. With a beautiful and immersive recreation of post-Roman England and a super great Viking story, this is definitely a game you want to pick up if you like open-world games.
The return of the hidden blade is easily one of its best features and makes for rewarding and satisfying stealth gameplay. If you want to put tens of hours into a great open-world game with a lot of stuff to do, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is definitely worth picking up.

Although I think Assassin’s Creed Valhalla might be the best in the series as far as the writing and sheer volume of stuff to do are concerned, unless Ubisoft stops double-dipping with their franchises and starts making unique experiences that are more about passionate narratives and focused gameplay, I’m not sure how much longer I’m going to be willing to keep coming back. It breaks my heart to say this as a fan of the franchise from the beginning, but Assassin’s Creed desperately needs a return to form: less combat-heavy gameplay, more stealth and espionage.

Despite its strong connection to past games, Assassin's Creed Valhalla is more than capable of standing on its own. It takes a little while to build momentum, but when it hits its stride, Valhalla is a confident Assassin's Creed title that takes a few narrative risks which, as a whole, pay off. Eivor is a good hero with an identity that drives the mystery behind the main narrative, and she shines in the self-contained arc structure of Valhalla's story. The supporting cast may not shine as brightly, but it's easy to forgive that when exploring England and discovering new nuggets of worldbuilding is so rewarding.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla effortlessly plants its banner as the best open world RPG available for the new consoles. This Viking epic flexes its gore-soaked, tattooed muscles when it comes to world-building, and medieval England wows with its enchanting untamed vistas. It’s also portioned out at a steady pace and, if not for the repetitive, limited combat, Valhalla could have ranked even higher among our favourite games in the series.

Torn between two games the could have been, Assassin's Creed Valhalla is by no means a bad game. It's actually quite good, but it comes off ultimately as less than the sum of its parts. The core of the Assassin's Creed gameplay is there, but the environments don't lend themselves to exploit it. The core of an Ubisoft open world Viking game is also there, but story progression keeps pulling you from that space to force the narrative forward. The coolest bits of the combat are locked behind treasure chests scattered across that vast world, and other awkward inconsistencies. Interspersed are low notes dragging you forward to...well, not so much a present-day, but a near-future-day storyline that is even more stale than it was four or five major sequels ago when it well and truly jumped the shark. There are two competing experiences here: that as as Assassin, and that as a Viking, that either on its own feels like it might have been a triumph and better than this good but not great Assass-king hybrid we have.

The more you explore England, the more clearly it emerges as an ideal Assassin's Creed playground. It's history with a history: battered Roman villas beside York's Viking Huts and the Saxons' Christian strongholds. And this is before hallucinatory huffs drag you to mythic realms and continents that shouldn't be spoiled here. But this is surface-level stuff. Peer under the Animus hood and Valhalla's real ancestral DNA lies in the past 13 years: streamlining Ubisoft's recent RPGs without losing scale, and rediscovering its murkier modus operandi along the way. There are even papers on the wind to chase and a Jesper Kyd soundtrack to accompany them. What could have been an elephants' graveyard of forgotten ideas instead feels like a series-wide victory lap. Yes, Vikings are a good fit, but who knew the most potent history Ubisoft could pillage would be its own?

IGN (8 out of 10) (80%)

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a big, bold, and ridiculously beautiful entry to the series that finally delivers on the much-requested era of the Viking and the messy, political melting pot of England’s Dark Ages. It walks a fine line between historical tourism, top-shelf conspiracy theory, and veiled mysticism against the backdrop of a grounded and focused story. Fresh takes on several of the series’ established loot and quest systems help to keep the things fluid and nuanced, though progression could use refinement. There’s also a bigger than usual horde of bugs and blemishes to contend with from start to finish. But while it may not be the most stylish or polished, its rugged and brutal look at the muddy business of Scandanavian expansion is as memorable and dense as an Assassin’s Creed has ever been, and it makes great use of the new consoles.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla's vision of ninth-century England is a beautiful place to explore, populated with a great cast of characters who make up for the bland new protagonist, Eivor. Nevertheless, the tired overarching story of Templars and Assassins, and a design ethos that overstuffs the setting with side activities, add unnecessary bloat and distractions to the experience. Valhalla's a solid action-adventure game that does well to capture the turmoil of its historical era, but it's weighed down by the increasingly ponderous legacy of the series it represents.

But I also found myself making excuses for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla until I couldn’t any longer. It mimics the Odyssey formula but takes a step backward in almost every way. It sacrifices story for scale. It’s designed to discourage stealth in favor of epic battles. It’s true to the Viking experience, but it isn’t true to the Assassin’s Creed experience. That’s why it comes off feeling like the least essential game in the whole series. Impressive in some of its accomplishments, but inessential all the same.

And even without the Aegean sparkle of Odyssey, this is an idyllic tapestry for Ubisoft’s artists. This sunlight streaming through the clouds, bathing rich greed fields and vine-covered ruins and burgeoning cathedrals in its golden benediction! Ubisoft’s artists are to open world games what Richard II is to words, and their talent shines throughout Valhalla’s England: this sceptered isle, this earth of majesty, this other Eden, demi-paradise, this little world, this precious stone set in the silver sea, this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England. So what if it’s not as good as Odyssey? I’ll take it!

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla should serve as a learning experience like Assassin’s Creed Unity, the last installment that forced Ubisoft to rethink its approach. Valhalla’s unnecessarily inflated hour count, limited stealth mechanics, disconnected story, and overwhelming sense of familiarity all point to a series once again on the decline because of its inability to focus on its strengths. Obsessing over playtime and Content™ at the cost of innovation and depth puts Valhalla‘s ability to actually get into Valhalla in question, as it doesn’t quite earn the kind of glory that only the best Vikings achieve.
