Kamikaze

Kamikaze is a 1-player strategy wargame for the TRS-80 CoCo.

A game of naval combat between Japanese and American aircraft carriers during World War II. Game play occurs between January 01, 1945 and January 08, 1945. Each day is divided into 4 turns set during daylight hours from 0600 - 1800.

The game starts from the bridge view, where the player can view the status of their two aircraft carriers Dolphin and Seminole, and their fighter, dive bomber, and torpedo bomber allotment. The player can view their ships under the flag menu. Map views the gridded map screen, target examines contacts made using radar and search, ready prepares planes for air cover and attack, repair allow fixes to the carriers, and convert allows moving aircraft between carriers.

Most game play occurs from the map view. Radar is used when the player activates the map, and looks for nearby enemy ships and planes. In search, the player sends out aircraft and can evaluate up to 4 squares per turn. The player also can send out 3 picket gunboats to look for Japanese craft each turn, but these are at risk of being destroyed by Japanese air attack. The player institutes air attacks from this menu, and can send any readied aircraft to attack enemy ships within range. Fighter craft can be used to defend from incoming bombers and enemy fighters. At the end of air combat the player can move their fleet.

During the Japanese attack, the player can be attacked by Japanese kamikaze fighters. The player enters an arcade sequence where they control the main gun of their defending craft, and try to shoot down incoming Japanese planes. The player can take a limited number of hits before their ships are sunk. Surface attacks occur if the player's fleet directly encounters the Japanese fleet, and the player can either choose to sacrifice one of their vessels to cover their escape or directly engage in combat with the more heavily armed Japanese force.
