Sound advice! There is music, there is voice acting and there are a few mild shock moments that will benefit from having sound
The game starts with an animated sequence showing a film crew arriving at an abandoned hotel to make a ghost hunting program. Four of the crew disappear inside, literally leaving the cameraman outside.
This title screen comes at the end of the introduction. the setting is the Alexander Vale hotel and the 'X' comes from Alexander while the 'V' comes from 'Vale'
The main menu
The game configuration options
There are four difficulty settings
Each of these pictures opens the relevant Big Fish Games store page
The loading screen
The player takes the role of James Blackthorn who has experience in dealing with ghosts. We are travelling to the hotel to meet with the film crew who arrived, and got into difficulty, in the introduction.
The exterior of the hotel. The game starts here.
The game has an optional tutorial
A variation on a standard lock puzzle. Instead of lighting up all the symbols we have to select a specific sub-set. Help like this is available on all puzzles by clicking on an INFO button on the far left
The first hidden object puzzle. Items in white are hidden in plain sight whereas items in gold require an additional action to make or reveal them.
This is the ghost hunting team. Who took the photograph?
The player is notified when a new task comes along. This is the hotel's foyer, it was once Alexander Vale's mansion until something happened in the 1920's there was an attempt to make it into a hotel.
The in-game map
Our main aid in ghost hunting is Patrick.
Using Patrick for the first time. This is a three phase puzzle, first we use it to examine symbols that are otherwise invisible, then we twiddle the buttons to tune it which results in an image we have to match it to the background.
The game makes use of zoom windows like this especially for locks and cupboards
I've not come across a lock puzzle like this before, it was quite tricky. As the dial rotates the shape of the image to be completed changes.
After solving some, but not all, of the puzzles in the hotel foyer we get the lift working ans wind up here. There's an immediate roof collapse cutting off the third floor.
A small rotating maze puzzle
This is a bit different, more of a 'Concentration' puzzle than hidden objects. There are twelve objects, six pairs to be found but each object is hidden behind something else
Our first grizzly find! He's frozen to death by a fire yet out Patrick device finds nothing unusual
This is not paranormal activity, this is what happens when we use the HINT option
She looks like our missing cousin and he looks like a gangster, this is not going to end well.
Here we have to restore an image by swapping the rows and the columns
Patrick has been used outdoors and this resulted in another picture reconstruction puzzle
A variation on the hidden object scene. The silhouettes at the bottom of the screen are not necessarily aligned in the same way as the objects in the picture.
This is a bit different!
In some games using the hint button just shows an arrow to the exit from the current room, this game tells you where to go and takes you there.
