The Great War: 1914-1918
- The Great War: 1914-1918 (1992 on DOS, Amiga)
Description
The Great War: 1914-1918 is a turn-based strategy game set during World War I. It is played on an overhead map of Europe where the player either controls the Allies or the Central Powers. The main interaction is clicking on troops and giving them orders like moving, defending, attacking, etc. Which actions are available is decided based on the ZOC (Zone of Control) which basically means which nation has control over a territory. Each action costs GNP which stands for a nation's readiness to continue the war - if it runs out, the nation will have no recourse for enemy attacks and cities will be conquered without resistance. When GNP is zero and no cities are left, the nation surrenders. The only ways to gain GNP is either the automatic gain twice a year or transferring them from allied nations.
The game is based on historic execution of the real war. This means, for example, that some happenings (for example the US entry of war) are fixed and the nations have advantages and disadvantages, e.g. not every nation receives GNP twice a year, the Ottoman Empire has a max limit of six GNP or Great Britain/USA will never surrender because their cities are not part of the game map. The winning conditions are different for the Allies (Russia has to be kept in the war and a armistice reached by November 1918) and the Central Powers (Russia has to surrender until October 1917 and a armistice avoided).
The registered shareware version unlocks the option to play as the Allies as well as an alternative scenario in which Germany concentrates its troops on Russia instead of France.
