Bagel Shop
Description official description
Bagel Shop is a puzzle game presented by the magazine The New Yorker as part of its "Cartoons & Puzzles" issue dated December 26, 2022. The online version, unlike its print counterpart, has some interactivity that makes it easier to fill out and ultimately solve.
The game is essentially a crossword puzzle with an unusual format. The player is presented with an image of a tray of bagels, all divided into six parts. Each bagel part can contain one letter. To the right of the image (or in a separate tab if playing on a mobile browser) are two lists of clues. One is a list of clues for each row across; the other is a list of clues for each bagel (instead of the traditional columns). The words inputted into each bagel can start at any point in its wheel, necessitating that the player do the rows first.
The clues are a mix of vocabulary, historical and pop cultural knowledge. Some rows actually have two clues; the player must answer both and input them as one word. When the puzzle is completed, the letters in dashed borders will spell out the caption of the New Yorker cartoon displayed on the page.
