Empire in the Sky (Demo Version)

Moby ID: 210892

Description

Empire in the Sky is a game set in a stylized 1960s-1980s retro cartoon universe. Data in the game that generates the procedural universe is biased toward realism, providing an educational aspect to the game's world. In the game, the user controls a single astronaut that can enter and leave vehicles and stations. Interiors of stations and vehicles are procedurally generated based on the shape and context of the structure.

Astronauts can take the helm of spacecraft, and control and navigate the spacecraft through interstellar space and land on planets and moons. On planets, moons, and in deep space, alike, players can build a support 2D grid-based structure from placing squares called "struts" and then place 3D structures on the struts. The 3D structures are designed entirely by the player. The player uses a 2-paned planning view (top and side) to design components from generative geometric primitives (toroids, spheroids, pyramidal, conical, etc), that are combined to create pieces of larger constructions including spaceship hulls, primary structural architectural forms, space ship engines, turret mountable weapons, individual ammo variants like missiles and projectiles, and the player designates the combined components as either spaceships or structures. Structures can be built on planets and moons directly on their surfaces, without struts.

Players can also tune their weapons to be beam or projectile-based weapons, and control the color and type of damage that the beam causes. Players can also design tractor beams of varying effectiveness. Alien space ships are randomly generated from the same primitives players use to develop their own components, spaceships and structures. Players can explore a procedural universe of 20000 or more individual solar systems containing celestial objects like moons, planets, asteroids of varying consistency, black holes, main-sequence stars, pulsars, quasars and white holes.

The game was eventually only made available as a demo and was never released in full.
