DS Telejan

DS Telejan is a Japanese mahjong game for the Data East Cassette System. It can be played as single player against the computer, and the clock, or for two human players.

The mahjong tiles may belong to one of three suits (circles, bamboo or numbers) numbered from one to nine, or they can be dragons (red, green and white) or winds (North, South, East and West). There are four copies of each tile in the deck. The aim of the game is to collect a hand consisting of three "melds" and a pair, before your opponent. A meld may either be a "kan" (all four of a kind), "pon" (three of a kind) or "chii" (a run of three consecutively numbered tiles of the same suit).

The game starts with 13 tiles each, with the remainder face down in a heap. Players take it in turns to pick up a new tile from the heap and then place one face up in the discard pile. If the opponent has just discarded a tile that you can use to create a meld, you can select what you want to complete (kan, pon or chii) and the resulting meld is shown face-up to your opponent. If you are just waiting on one last tile to complete your hand (known as a ready hand), you can select "reach" which states to your opponent that you will always discard the tile you pick-up unless you use it to complete your hand. Selecting "reach" is not necessary, but increases your score when you win. When your hand is complete, you can press the "ron" button.

During game-play, a timer counts down. While the timer is above zero, you can continue play even if you had lost the previous game.
