Description
Atlantis is a 1-player side-scrolling arcade game for the BBC Micro.
A legend recorded by the Greek philosopher Plato tells of a great island west of the pillars of Hercules, adorned with every beauty. Circa 9400 B.C., an attack was made on Europe by the people of Atlantis. But these invaders were driven off by the Europeans. Later the island's inhabitants became wicked, and Atlantis was, as a consequence, swallowed up by the ocean.
The year is now 2100 A.D. and, once again, Europe is under threat from the Atlantians, aided by high technology weapons and defense systems. The player's mission is to infiltrate the defenses of the undersea city of Atlantis and destroy everything they see.
The player controls a submarine that fires directly forwards and drops bombs. The submarine can move in all directions in the left half of the screen while enemy dangers approach from the right. The game is divided into multiple stages where new dangers appear. These include missiles launching from the ground, caverns full of jellyfish, ships dropping mines, barricades that raise from the floor, attacking eels, and other dangers. The player gains points from destroying the Atlantian infrastructure on the seafloor. The player starts with three lives and, if they hit a danger, they restart an individual stage.
