THE CHARACTERS

M. J. TURNER: For as long as you can remember, the Space Patrol has been your life. From the moment you joined until you were drummed out, you considered yourself the bust pilot in the Corps. Your dismissal was a result of doing your job too well. Now the Admiral has offered you a choice: courtmartial, or a secret mission outside the Boundary. You are not sure whether this is blackmail or the chance of a lifetime. There is only one way to find out.
JEAN G. CLERC: You finally decide that the ultimate space ship will never be built inside the Boundary. You must go outside. You and the Run Amok lift off from Norstar— silently alone. You picture yourself returning in your dream ship, built with advanced alien technology. They say it can't be done. You'regoing to prove them wrong.
CORIN STONESEEKER: The morning sun glints off your ship, Quest's End. It is time to begin your search for that which has been lost for twenty generations. You lift off, headed for the planet Bugeye, a Ghost World, cut off from the Nine Worlds by the Boundary. You pass the buoy marking the Boundary and watch it fade from view. Your quest has begun.
LARAN DARKWATCH: You are a revered Councilor of the Final Church of Man, but both your destiny and the Truth you seek lie out in space. In the past weeks you have secretly outfitted your spaceship, the Jihad, with equipment needed to travel through the Boundary. You don't know where the Founders went, but you know where they started: the planet Cathedral. Perhaps there are memories there that will lead you onward.
PROFESSOR LEE DAMBROKE: You climb into your ship, the Black Abyss, check the controls, and lift off. As you look back on the planet Harvard, you watch your past fading away on the viewscreen. The Boundary will no longer stop you from doing the research you want. You are leaving the Nine Worlds. and everyone you know, to search for new discoveries— Out There.
VALENTINE STEWART: Space is where your family started. Why should you have to rule the empire from the ground? Suddenly it comes to you. You could work the spacelanes yourself; all you need is a ship. So you steal the Golden Goose right of the Family's private spaceport. You kiss the ground once, for your ancestors. It's time to leave.
