TurboRaketti

Description

TurboRaketti is a Finnish two-player "caveflyer", where you and a mate fly your Thrust-like ships around intricate levels with the ultimate aim of trying to shoot each other down. Each ship can be fitted with an extra weapon, which is triggered by pulling down on the joystick. The game has five levels to fight on:

  • Ekolos is an ecologic level with earth tones and wild plantlife.
  • Sitimus is an overhead map of a traffic system, a notion which doesn't quite fit in with how your ships have gravity to fight with.
  • Metarola is a high-tech cave with pipe systems and industrial installations.
  • Likvidius can be seen as the backyard of Metarola, since it is filled with chemicals and industrial waste.
  • Tropulus is like the Finnish countryside, with red huts and pine trees.

Your "Turboranking" can be saved to disk for posteriority, and so that your friends may never forget who entered the first place in 1998.

Not bad, but no GF2

The Good
The graphics are as good as you can expect. Not as flashy as Roketz, and more colourful and varied than Gravity Force 2, with some creative solutions such as the roadwork on Sitimus. The controls are much better than on games such as Roketz, but not quite as perfect as on GF2, and comparisons are inevitable in this field, with these games being very contemporary, dividing Amiga users into camps a dozen years ago.

The Bad
The game is in Finnish. And that's no problem. It doesn't detract from the game, I just though I had to come up with something bad, but the fact is that Finnish probably is the language in which the term "caveflyer" was first coined. If there is a problem with this game, it is rather that there are only a couple of levels available, and no level editor. Some levels, such as Tropulus and Metarola, are immensely playable, whereas others are more gimmicky and won't have you coming back for more time and again. This can be said of GF2 as well, but that game has hundreds of levels and so many settings, that this is never a problem. With TR, you are left with the few levels the author made for you.

The Bottom Line
Sweden-Finland: 2-1, but the Finns put up a really good fight!
