Kevtris

Moby ID: 25289

Description

Kevtris was the first Colecovision game to be developed for almost ten years, and it was a natural choice to start with a game that was simple to implement, yet had been released too late to be officially ported to the Coleco console; namely Tetris.

Despite being an early home-brew, Kevtris features both colourful graphics and background music, as well as three different game modes for both one and two players as well as handicaps. Apart from the normal Tetris game mode, there is the zero-out mode, where you have to clear a set number of lines to win a game, and the builder mode, where the blocks don't fall automatically, giving you all the time in the world to plan your moves.

Trivia

Development

Kevtris was made with no proper documentation of the Colecovision, based mostly on reverse-engineering. Only afterwards did the programmer find out that the graphics and sound chips were standard parts which had been fully exploited and documented by programmers on other systems such as the MSX.

Release

Kevtris was originally released in a limited series of 100 numbered cartridges. Nowadays, the game is released for free on the internet, though you would have to burn your own EPROM in case you want to play it on your Colecovision.
