Description

Eat the Whistle is a soccer game originally released to tie in with the 1998 World Cup, held in and won by France. The full tournament is included, but custom leagues can also be created. The game's perspective is from the top with a slight angle, but scrolling sideways rather than top-bottom.

The game includes variable weather and light conditions, variable referee strictness, and different match lengths. As well as realistic soccer, there is a mode compared by the packaging to Speedball 2, with no fouls and randomly appearing power-ups.

Not perfect, but so fresh!

The Good
The arcade mode makes the games more approachable than hard-core footy games for those of us who don't know much about rules, and the arcade teams, taken from Japanese TV series, adds that certain Italian flair that can be seen in many Italian Amiga games. If you select one of the non-arcade modes, you have enough options to be occupied for a long time, and the graphics are really well-drawn – especially if you have a graphics card and a fast computer.

The developers also deserve an éloge for their ongoing support, with patches for new hardware and an editor released long after the game was first put out. That's admirable, and keeps the game up-to-date even on a new PPC Amiga. External developers are also welcomed with a special directory containing source files and developer documentation.

The Bad
I hate the wait before a match ensues, without any explanation as to what the computer is doing while you stare at the match screen. Documentation is overall very lacking. Some people may be used to that, but I really would want a printed manual. This is a football game, so it could definitely be fitted into a CD booklet. On the other hand, this is a 1998 release for the ever-shrinking Amiga market, so you can't expect too much.

The Bottom Line
One year after the last iteration of Sensi Soccer, the Amiga received its last footy sim, and it was not so bad as you might have thought. If you have enough memory and a reasonably fast CPU, you should give it a chance.
